gutting my electronics

I have a schecter Deluxe 5 string, with crappy pickups and electronics, so I was wondering what my options were for replacing the pickups and electronics, and what's different between brands with the sounds and such I can get. And do I need to get a new electronics with new pickups or would what I have work to improve the sound quality?

I also want to know what all I have to do to change the pickups and the preamp (instructions) or just link me to a thread.

I"m good with those, and if not, my dad's an electrical engineer and he's very good at that stuff.

so with that done, what are everybody's suggestions for which pickups (and electronics) and more importantly where to get them.
