I have been contemplating lately what to buy for my new bass. I have pretty much got it got it down to two basses, but am open to suggestion.

The first one is a Schecter Stilleto Deluxe. I have never played one of these and have heard that Schecters are good for metal music. But what about popping, slapping and more punchy, treble kind of tones? I have also heard that there rated higher than Warwicks.

The other is a Standard Fender Jazz. I have of course, played many jazzes and have liked all of them because they are so versatile.

I am just wondering if anyone knows anything about the Schecters and if they are any good for funk type stuff.

Schecter, definetely.

Go try one, they are very versatile, and reason why they are favorites of many around here for that price range.

the deluxe's suck IMO. Get custom or higher. The deluxes don't have the preamp which gives schecter the tone it's known for.

I'm gonna say, go with the fender, but take that with a grain of salt, since i'm a fender whore. :D

I'd say get a Schecter, but not that one imparticular, as already meantiones this one is missing the amazing pre amp, funnily enough I'm playing my school's Schecter.

two of my favorite basses are the marcus miller signature jazz bass (which I own), and the schecter stiletto elite 5 (which i plan on getting as soon as i have the money), and i play metal, and i slap when I feel like it

anyway, i just so happened to play a fender MIM J and a stiletto deluxe the other day (my friend was browsing for a new guitar and i had nothing to do), and i have to say, the standard jazz is much better than the stiletto deluxe, but the stiletto elite takes all

I love the look, feel, and playability of schecters but dont like the electronics. A very bright, cold, sterile tone. Although if you play metal or tons of slap/pop that might be the kinda sound you are looking for. I prefer warmer, more organic tones so I didnt like it.

That being said, I play a standard jazz bass. The looks, tone, and feel were more my style. Its very versatile and reliable bass. But standard fenders are a bit inconsistant sometimes, make sure to "try before you buy" so that you get a good one...I went to guitar center and tried out 3 or 4 different jazzes and bought the best playing one.

Have you ever heard a metal bass player play with the same EQ settings he does with a metal band?

Fender Jazz does it for me. Legendary bass.

Fender, but I'm pretty biased on that opinion.

I would say fender but I do own one. They are easily moddible if theres somethin you don't like. Most of the fender is good stock though IMO.

I think he means: if you hear a metal bassist play by himself, he probably won't have the same EQ settings that he would use in a band.

Contradicting that, I think a bassist should be able to use whatever goddamn tone he wants in a band situation, if it appeals to him.

I'd go Schecter, but a different model. I'd go with a Studio, Custom, or Elite.

I own a Fender and I hate it. I really only keep it becase 1) I don't have a four-string and 2) it was my late uncle's, so it is sentimental.

Both can be good for metal and slap, personally I would go with the Fender, heavier bottem end than the Schecter.

.

Agreed, but I like Fenders. Both would be a good buy.

By the way, I believe the Exotic is discontinued so you might have to get a used one.

Too hard to decide!! hmmm... As stock basses i'd say go with the jazz. Unless you were getting a schecter custom 4 then I'd say go for that :)
