How much money SHOULD you realistically spend on a bass? I mean $5,000 is a little much. The exotic woods LOOK nice, but do they play as good as they look? Do they sound that good? Do they get some spectacular tone from the woods? Why don't more famous bassists use expensive basses such as Elrick and F-Bass? (A few of my favorites) Why don't we see more famous bassists using 21st century designs? Do these basses work well in a band environment? Do they sound nice along with other instruments? Are they just used for solo type stuff? Why don't you see more guitars with these exotic woods and compicated designs? Would it be worth the money?

These are several questions I'd like to get answered because I'm really getting confused with this whole expensive bass topic.

EDIT: Another question, how good do people expect you to be when you have a bass that expensive?

if you've got the money, and your commited, get a nice bass.
if your not, dont.

if you are a gigging musician, and require differant sounds, get a nice bass.
if your not, dont.

if you're a collector and like to ad vintage and expensive items to your collection, get a nice bass.
if your not, dont.

if your a kid in his room (like most of us) get what you can afford and what you like.

Allot of session musicans use things like Elricks and F-basses. And allot of them also use Jazz basses. Its just a case of taste, and the tone you want.

you know, the thing i always noticed with those really expensive basses are that the people who buy them are generally compensating for lack of talent. now, that's not to say that anyone who owns an F bass isn't talented, but it always seems more common. Ofcourse you've got Wooten who plays Foderas, and the other greats like him. But I guess people just don't want that much flash.
If you're touring, you wouldn't really want a $5000 bass getting damaged as much as your beaten up fender or whatever.
High end basses are too much art for me.

It's all a matter of how much money you have. If you have to mortgage your home to buy an exotic bass, then don't cause you'll really get served just fine by an old p-bass.

On the other hand, if you the type of guy that can spend a thousand dollars on a night outm, then why wouldn't you buy a 10000 dollars bass? It may sound the same and whatever, but you're paying for exclusivity. Besides, I really think that when you have around 10 million bucks in your personal account 5000 start seeming like wallet cash.

Lots of people who buy them are rich and like to show off, basically. Or they just like to feel better than everyone else who doesn't have one.
