Part one:

basically, is there any real way of telling what is making your cables buzz? the soldering seems fine so could it be improper shielding, or possibly worn out material somewhere in the cable? if it's something that can usually be determined, is there any way of fixing it?

Part two:

in your opinion, what's the best EHX distortion/fuzz pedal out there that's still in production? i'm getting a new pedal on friday and i'm debating between just a russian muff, or spending the extra money on a muff'n, both of which i can get useable tones out of. i'm not really asking this to help persuade me one way or the other, i just figured since i'm making a thread already, i'm curious enough to add a second part.

i'd go with the russian big muff pi, but i don't have any experience with the english Muff'n. doesn't it suck the bass out of your tone, since it's really meant for guitar?

You can cut an inch off the cable and re-solder it at the ends. If that doesn't work, get a new one. I use mic cable because it's balanced and cuts down on noise. I get it for 30 cents a foot, in Canadian.

I say muff'n. If I had the choice over the muff I have now and the muff'n, I would go muff'n. But that's me. Honestly, I say eff distortion right now, my next EH purchase is either a small stone, tube zipper, or Micro Synth.

What's the Micro Synth like?

You won't be dissapointed. Great pedal.

I <3 EHX pedals. A store near me has a vintage Big Muff Pi for like $100. If they still have it in a month, I might get it, or maybe the vintage Deluxe Electric Mistress they have there.

I know, my guitarist got it and I was like "damn, that's some low end" so I tried it on my bass, and I liked it.

update on good EHX distortion. try out the Graphic Fuzz. It's cool in a weird way, and you can get a variety of distortion tones from it. reminiscent of a Muff, but with more control. But definatly give it a try first.

Just buy new cables, buy some really nice cables with neutrik chuck strain relief ends, it could also be a grounding problem.
Assuming your american its likely to be grounding problems (your power supplies are unstable compared to uk) or it could be your amp/ bass.

There's no point in wasting money on new cables if you dont need to.

But yes, try a different cable, try your cables in a different amp with a different bass... it could be anything really. My brother's guitar amp buzzes if he just uses a certain outlet in our house.

yes, the cable IS the problem and i tried cutting each side off and resoldering them. no luck. oh well, it was worth a shot.

BK: i'm going to guitar center tonight, i'll see if they have one.

thanks people
