What scales, modes etc. do you use for writing? Or is it mainly spontanious? I'm just trying it and really stuck for ideas.
Thanks :)
Also, someone suggest a good overdrive tone with a Boss ODB-3 and Hartke HA2000.
Muchly appreciated

how much overdrive?
i'd try maxing out everything on the ODB-3 (other than volume) and setting everything on the hartke flat.

Oh think more subdued than Jesse F. Keeler but nastier than Tim Commerford
I'll give that a go :thumb: cheers dude

hmmm.... ok then...
ODB-3: set EQ flat (or boost both treble and bass a tiny bit) and turn the signal to mostly "wet" (i'd say about 3/4 of the way, since you'll need a bit more natural tone to come thru) and turn the drive (not sure what its called on the ODB, sustain? fuzz? whatever the setting is) all or most of the way (3/4 again would be good :thumb: ). set volume to match bass output
on the amp: turn preamp up alot (maybe all the way, maybe half) and cut a little bass, add quite a bit of mids, and add a tiny bit of treble.
:thumb: that should get you started. i'm sure you can find a good setting if you mess around with all those for starters.

As for writing, go for what feels good. lol. learn your scales and modes and then just use what you need. When I go into writting, I don't go "I'm going to use A dorian in this song" I find something that sounds good, then look for a scale, or I'm lazy and just say eff scales and keep writing.

Hey,
just done some recording, will put some up soon.
Try this:
Put the tube and SS on max.
Boost low mids and a bit of treble/high mids.
Max the gain on your ODB-3.
My tone is all about distortion and octaves, and it works really well. Just experiment!
As far as scales are concerned - I don't even think about that. I just play whatever comes into my head, or what my vocalist wants or w/e.
For example I recently wrote a really fast piece in D min, but then wrote another piece in Bb Dominant 7.
Experiment!

http://www.wheatdesign.com/bassbook/
read and make sure you understand all of that, it really helped me as far as basic theory is concerned.
also, theory is and isnt important, like i said, i throw in alot of out of key notes in my jams and it seems to fit so just go by ear. but it never hurts to know theory.

Aphex Twin. http://www.myspace.com/rdjaphex
High Contrast. http://www.myspace.com/highcontrastuk

There's some random stuff you might like. It's a bit more accessible than a lot of stuff. Astral Projection is more psychtrance, but still amazing.

In a drum n bass band spontaneous is fine as you don't have to worry about anyone not knowing what scale/chord/arpeggio etc to play.

Squarepusher goes beyond just drum and bass, he does garage and wered noise and stuff too (as does aphex tween), Squarepusher is set aside though because hes a ****ing incredible bassist too! anyone heard him playing solo bass? ****ing ace tapper.

I'd agree he goes beyond Drum and Bass but he still comes back to it.When he first started out he was a D'n'B DJ and progressed from there.
You see him on his tour late last year?. The best show I have ever seen, the fact him did a improv jazz set before his D'nB/Trance set just made the night so complete.

lightning bolt is another great 2 piece. but definitely not tuned like a bass at all.
if you're writing for drum and bass, kind of think of your bass as a guitar. you gotta play around with doing rhythm and leads. You also want to be fairly repetitive or else it's going to sound like solo bass featuring drums.
oh, and listen to whirlwind heat. http://www.whirlwindheat.com they're an awesome drum + bass + occasional synth. i think they're one of the best drum and bass in terms of song writing.

I always thought of that to be one of his worst songs, its really doesn't compare to the songs like Vordhosbn, ****/Ver 10, Cliffs, pretty much the whole of Richard D. James.

I like drum and bass, and i don't see why anyone should have a problem admitting that
Although Sqaurepusher and Aphex Twin are my favourites
The ODB-3 has:
Level
EQ (low and high stacked)
Blend
Gain
I got a really good DFA1979 tone out of mine, I had it written down somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.

Aw well, Ive only got the Come to Daddy Ep and the Windowlicker single, but Ive heard a bunch more of his stuff from his videos on Youtube. Donkey Rhubarb for one is incredible.
And for the guy who said AT wernt DnB, imo at the heart of it, Richard still makes DnB, just very advanced, out-there DnB, he throws so much more into it than just snare / kick patterns and a melody like a lot of mediocre DnB, he layers it and gives it so many interlocking melodies, and his manipulation of samples is sublime!

Maybe you should invest in some good speakers?
If you have crappy speakers, then you'll probably only ever hear the snare drum, DnB is imo some of the biggest sounding music, since it covers such a wide frequency range, and almost invariably has the bass Frequencies pushed a lot.

I think I should point out, the "Drum/bass" of the thread title and the Drum n Bass that are now being talked about are very different things.
peeted
06-28-2006, 06:15 PM
well the thread starter never stated what he ment, thats why i refrenced both. drum/bass isnt a genre of music its just a band formation (could play jazz, ambient, indie, metal whatever) were as drum n bass is so its more logical to asume he ment drum n bass since he seemed to be refering to it as a genre.
allso esp have you heard the dilinger escape plan/mike patton cover of come to daddy? its ****ing ace, very similar to the origional but just taken even further.

I cant say I have, Id like to though.
Doubltess Aphex would hate it
Even in the late 90s, when Radiohead were name dropping Aphex all the time, saying he was a hge influence and they really looked up to him, Richard Snubbed them, and the rumour that they'd tour together, with the line "I wouldnt tour with them, because I dont like them". Blunt and to the point, but when a man as talented as Prichard G. Kraymes is talking about some goons like Radiohead, he is allowed to be so blunt.
