yes, just learn one bar at a time.

It's a bitch, especially considering he played it on a fretless. I've tried to conquer it, but never fully mastered it, at least up to tempo. With enough practice, though, anything is possible, so just keep at it.

It's a hard song, if you're going to learn it, learn it off of the sheet music but redo the fingerings to suit yourself better.

I put some time into learning a bit of it a little while ago, from a Jaco transcription book, and found a lot of the fingerings provided for it didn't suit me at all.

Go listen to Alex's version of what he has so far. It's all fretless and stuff.

Hah, yeah. A bit of irony because that's how it is normally played, just saying because I thought his intonation was damn spiffy.

That's as far as I got.

After that it gets a bit silly.

I'm quite sure Jaco recorded it on his fretted '62.

I managed to do it... I spent most saturday afternoon fully drilling it.. Yeah i can play it now, as fast as jaco's recorded version.

Just go thru it slow, master it at one speed then move on. Master it at that speed, then move on.. etc.

i learnt it as a recital piece, its boring to learn all the way through imo, but nice piece. Just work through one phrase at a time and u'll get there

I could never figure out what right hand fingerings to use for the part after the intro. I'm assuming he played it thumb index middle. this would mean mastering a new technique to play one song. I'm just not that dedicated!
And to Rowan, I'd love to hear a recording

I don't agree with that. If I ran all day, everyday I wouldn't be the fastest person ever. Yes practice goes a long way, but it comes down to natural ability also.

If you practice enough you'll probably be able to learn it. Take it in small doses and then work them up too speed. You should do fine.

All this practise...

No, I mean that some people(not you) can't be as good as Jaco. I'm sure you'll get better. Just practice it and you'll will get better. If you can't seem to get a song after a lot of practice, just take a break and come back to it later. There have been a lot of songs I couldn't learn at the time. I took a break from them and came back to them later on and I learned it. Practice will make you better, but there is a limit.

i dont realy get the point of learning cromatic fantisy unless its for a performance, if your good enough to be playing that then ya should realy be writing your own stuff or playing some jazz.
if you realy do wana learn it though just do it bar by bar and practice it to a metranome.

Same here, although a tinny bit of my suckage is a squier bass and no lessons. These guys could play better than me if they had broken fingers.

i can get it down for the most part, its just sitting down and learning it though, its a tedious peice, but i think it be a great song just to be able to play when you need to:chug:

I think Havic has a legitimate point, if you compare it to Jaco's recorded version you can hear the difference. I don't think Havic is trying to put him down, just making an observation.

Chromatic Fantasy........sucks. For me, it's a classic example of the concept of solo bass gone wrong.

Exactly. Not everyone around here puts people down.

Constructive critism, people can improve from this. Nothing bad.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Havic. I practised it constantly for quite a while and got it pretty good, but not quite up to speed. It's not too hard to get it sounding alright, but to master it is pretty darn hard.

The thing about Chromatic Fantasy is while it is technically very impressive and I appreciate it a lot for that, I don't actually find it greatly pleasing to listen to, which makes it a bit harder to keep up the motivation of slogging through the transcription.

I find that it's a hell of a lot better sounding when you play it slower. I'm not actually a big fan of Jaco's recording of it.

I find that true with a lot of Jaco songs. Take his version of Blackbird. It might sound okay at 126 or w/e with the harmonica, but on it's own at least it sounds much better significantly slower, maybe 100 or so.

So did I, as it happens. It's a very sloppy recording. I'm going to re-record when I get the chance, I know I can do better than that.

what does Bach have to do with Jaco ruining one of his songs?

Jaded
06-28-2006, 03:08 PM
I started learning it as an audition piece and I got 4 bars down and got sidetracked. I've been meaning to start learning it again but I've been very busy lately.

Oh by no means was I putting the Wintermute down. I just think that the intonation was pretty shoddy. To compare him up against Jaco though isn't very fair, though.

Nah, my problem is not with the piece, it's with the sound of the piece played on solo bass. It was originally written for...harpsichord, I think? Still not my favourite piece of music, but it sounds reasonable on a harpsichord, or on piano or organ.

I don't believe bass has the right qualities to pull it off. At least not in the octave that Jaco played it in.

Hehe, I love Harpsicords.
