Ok my mom has a Korg M1 that she inherited from my uncle. She doesn't like the basic piano sound it has in it (the "My-Baldwin" sound) or any of the less traditional sounds. Is there some kind of ROM I can buy to plug into it to give her some better sounds? I don't really know anything about keyboards.

There are two slots on the keyboard where you could plug some kind of card. The back one is labeled "PCM data" and the one on the top is labeled "PROG/SEQ". What do these do? The "PROG/SEQ" one had been taped over - not sure if my uncle didn't want people screwing with his programs or if it was just busted.

Any advice appreciated.

You can buy a sound module to put it through. Kurzweile do really good piano sounds, listen to the Dresden dolls, that's all done with a Kurzweile.

I don't know the M1 but getting a good piano sound can be difficult. I have a Korg X5-D and after playing around with it for a while I created a really good piano sound.

How do sound modules work? because im really trying ot get a certain sound from a keyboardest i like and he uses a custom patch on a JV-1080 so do i just plug it into my keyobard then into my amp then just put it on the sound i want and it will play on the keyboard?

I've only used one in a studio actually, so it went midi Keyboard-Sound module-mixing desk-monitors
you just connect the keyboard to the sound module using a midi cable then output that to an amp.
