Minor Threat, the definitive Washington D.C. hardcore punk band, along with Bad Brains.

Fast, furious guitar riffs, angry screaming lyrics, passionate political ideals make one of the best punk bands of all time. I love them, I bought Complete Discography the other day and it's barely left my stereo.

It's too bad people only see them as obnoxious straight edgers. I think people should look past the fact that they wrote about being sXe if that bothers them and listen to their other songs, like Guilty Of Being White.

Anyway, discuss this legendary band.

Bad Brains went all New York.

And no one sees them of being obnoxious straight edgers. In fact, Minor Threat gets mad love everywhere.

I remember buying First Demo Tape and being blown away. Then I bought Complete Discography and was blown away even more.

There isn't a song by them that I don't like. One of my all time favorites is Look Back and Laugh. Also, the intro to In My Eyes is so ****in sick.

I know what you mean by this. When most people think of Minor Threat, the first thing that usually comes to mind is: straight edge. But when I think of them I think: one of the best bands ever.

In interviews I have read with him it says that the only songs that are about straight edge are "Straight Edge", "In My Eyes", and "Out of Step"; you know the obvious ones. Even though I am not edge Out of Step is probaly my favorite song by them, they were a great band and it is a shame they broke up when they did because I feel that they were writing their best stuff towards the end.

I love them alot.

I also reccomend that anyone that is looking to build speed on bass or guitar to learn 4 or 5 Minor Threat songs, master them, then keep building the tempo up and up. its really fun and it helps your speed TONS. This is how I learned to play bass and guitar. Granted, you're still gonna need dexterity and reach.

The End.

In honor of this thread, I will listen to some Minor Threat now, for the first time in ages. Maybe it'll psyche me up for this morning's World Cup activites.

They had broken up already by the time I was hopping around the scene, but I still managed to get the Salad Days 7" from some dude who was in the Bad Brains "camp" when I was at their show back in 85. I love that 7" more than any of the others I have.

I never much cared for the message Minor Threat carried, but they were too awesome for me not to listen to.

That song is about straight edge though it is just against alcohol, the songs I mentioned are specifically about straight edge. Granted if your edge you don't drink but you also don't smoke or do drugs or ****.

Anyways though what are your guys' favorite release by MT?

One of my favorite bands of all-time. I used to hate them, but they grew on me.

And on the point of being 'obnoxious straight edgers', I'd think they'd be seen as the least obnoxious of all straight edgers, since they were the first. Their straight edge songs are some of my favorites of theirs, the messages whether you are edge or not, are really well written and really powerful even today.

They're not making fun of Minor Threat, though. They really like the band, they just don't follow the message. There's plenty of people like that.

And I follow the straighedge teachings without considering myself straightedge. I just don't feel like using the term. Espcially since I've felt that I should stand up to these values long before I knew the term. However, I do like what Ian says. I really like minor threat, message or not. I didn't think I'd like them either, but they're one of my favorite punk bands.

They don't see Minor Threat as a sXe band but then when sXes talk about them it's like "OMIGOD YOU'LL BE OUT OF THAT WHEN YOU TURN 21"
And it's sad that you just can't accept the fact someone doesn't want to drink with you.

Actually, I was just hearing that today. I was in a coffeehouse to relax by myself, and there were these two obnoxious girls. One was talking about how straightedge she was, and her friend said "Oh, it's not gonna last" and her friend got all bitchy about it.

With a lot of people though, I think that's true. It's something that will be a phase for them.

For me, I don't see it though. If I can go to Bonnaroo and not even take a single drug offered to me (pot, acid, mescalin, Ecstacy, heroin, nitros oxcide, salvia, mushrooms... basically anything you could think of was probably there and offered to me) and not even think about it. Or go to so many parties where beer is prevolant, and not even think of taking a sip, I know that it's not just a fad. It's just the way I am. I don't have to force myself to stay away from it, because I just don't want it. I've never even smoked a cigarette.

Yeah, it's kind of tough. I'm stuck in a bad position. I'd prefer to be friends with people who don't do drugs and such, but at the same time I hate people who are straightedge and rub it in your face or are all militant about it.

And sadly my local punk scene has really changed. Most people are totally wasted all the time, and they're more violent and elitest. I really miss a few years ago when it didn't matter that I had long hippie hair but went to punk shows. Now I get hateful stares in my direction. It's hard for me to believe I was treated nicer when I was a naive 8th grader going to shows than now, but it's true.

Still, I go to shows.

Also, I'm edge.

I think the point about obnoxious sXe people is that its a decision you have made. I on the other hand have taken the decision to drink or whatever. I’m sure in most cases people can get on and accept one another’s decisions.

The place where trouble starts is when you at a party drinking a beer and an obnoxious sXe person starts preaching to you about liver problems and shiz.

Its sort of like.. whilst that may be what you think, this is clearly what I think. So dont start an argument.
