what computer have you gotten/do you want to get?

i think i'm one of the only people that didn't want/get a laptop. i just know i would lose it or it would be stolen in a week max. so for graduation my parents (last night) gave me a Dell E310.

i'm very happy. i just want a computer to play music/watch things on in my room. i'm going to temple and they are big on technology - they have a program where you can borrow a laptop for 2 hours if you want to - so if i want to do work outside or need one, i'll have it.

You're never going to rent out a laptop.

I got a desktop when I went to college, but a laptop is probably far more useful. If you can use one in class, they're far better for taking notes than a notebook and a pen.

I have a Macbook Pro for recording, which suddenly seems redundant now that I need more points to get into university and have to do an ICT course at college.

A laptop is so much more better than a desktop

I got a MacBook Pro recently, and it's probably the best computer I've ever owned. It's fast (dual processors), runs both Windows and Mac software, and it's safe from most viruses and spyware.

Hardly anyone brings a laptop to class at my school, and some that do bug the hell out of my with their noisy typing.

Pen and paper is cheap, usable for multiple semesters (notebooks), and available for me to draw on when boredom strikes.

Laptops aren't usable for multiple semesters? I guess I've been using mine wrong then!

I have a laptop even though I never really took it anywhere. It was nice sometimes for writing papers outside in the spring- yay wireless!

I hate laptops. Can't stand the keyboards, messing with charging, etcetera. Seeing as how I would never take it to classes, as my pencil and paper work fine, there would be no reason for me to put up with it.

Well, he said he's going to Temple, and if it is the one in central texas, I'll actually be living in the same area as another mxer.

I've been told I'm going to want a laptop when I go to college, but I don't see why. I recently built a new computer which I know will last me at least three to four years. Supposedly its a space issue.

Pen and Paper Pros: Cheap and... inexpensive...

Pen and Paper Cons: Archives take up space, Hurts my fingers when taking lots of notes, Slower than typing, I can't read my writing, that hot girl who wants to borrow my notes can't read my writing, no ctrl f feature

Laptop pros: Can read my writing, notes take up no space on a harddrive, notes don't get lost (unless stupidly named), notes easily emailed/imed to hot girl, boring teacher replaced by random blogs, random blogs easily emailed/imed to hot girl, ctrl f, books available on the computer (especially english books) and not in your backpack.

Laptop cons: New macbook burns my legs, expensive if stolen (why I never let it out of my sight), requires outlet with certain frequency, the paint program doesn't quite capture the fine curves like my notebook and pen, but guitar pro does capture my spare musical thoughts... which is probably a fair trade.

My guess is he's going to one of the ones based in Philly, since its the only nationally known Temple university.

I'm still struggling with the idea of getting a laptop for college. I seriously want one, but all the computers at local dealerships are going to be outdated in no time, not to mention they are overpriced and some functions are just not going to be enough.

A guy I know has a Gateway laptop but it screwed up rather fast.

to clarify: he is a she. (Cathy to be more precise)

and i'm going to Temple in Philly (for music ed)

anyways, back on topic... i prefer taking notes with pen and paper - it's more personal and i can do it exactly how i want it done. i also won't be distracted by freecell and spidersolitaire.

i really wanted a solid computer. something i couldn't drop or lose. i'm going to have an external harddrive so i'll be all set up when i come home on breaks.

i guess it all boils down to preference and ease-of-use.

oh, and i'd say 90% of my friends have macbook(pros) for college. i live in a wealthy little area.

That's a good list, though I just prefer pen and paper I guess.

I don't mind the archives taking up space either. I like being that crazy old guy who "knows it's here somewhere, I just have to find it." And the other cons don't really apply to me either, except the writing one but I've gotten over that and even help my mom grade papers when she can't read her students' writing.

Thats not really true anymore. Computers don't go out of date as fast as they used to. If you get a top of the line laptop today (so long as it can run Vista) it'll be a quality laptop for the next year and a half and a serviceable laptop for years. My cousin uses a 3 year old Dell that runs XP while he's at Penn State.

Any new laptop you get today won't be obsolete for a long time.

Well Cathy, my brother goes to Tyler (temple's art school) for Printmaking and is taking gen ed classes at Temple this summer.

I never got to take notes with a laptop (mine was a college graduation present) but I really wish I had had it for college.

I want to get one of those for school. But my school has computers in every dorm room, so unless I want to buy it myself, it will be a hard sell. However some majors require that you get a laptop, so maybe i'll pick one of those. A computer that runs both Windows and Mac would so clutch. I'd probably use Windows for school because the school uses mostly PCS, and use Mac for personal use.
