In this day and age I would say 512MB of RAM and a processor like a p4 2.8 or 3.0 with hyper-threading or AMD equivilant would be a good minimum start. 160 gig HD to start, also. PCI-E capable is also desirable. I think this is a good minmum set up for stability and performance that will suit your needs. Unless you want to go rock bottom like a Celeron or budget p4 or something. But maybe you don't. So this is a good minmum, fairly modern machine.

For recording, you should have a CPU that is at least 1 ghz, preferably 2+ depending on your recording software. You will also want some RAM. 512 at minimum but 1+ gig would be better. Also budget RAM is fine. If it is mainly for music and recording, then get a big hard drive. I would go with a 200 gig but anything over 100 would work too. Integrated graphics are fine too if you aren't gaming.

You could probably find a good deal on a computer like this through Dell. Or were you going to build it yourself?

That's way too much.

My ancient PC runs with a 20GB HD, 128MB RAM and 1.1Ghz. Sure it get's a little laggy sometimes but it does everything it needs to.

TS, However, you should always get a good 3D graphics card and a cheap external HD to seal the deal

Something like a cheap 2.4Ghz Celeron (or amd equivelant) would do. With about 512MB Ram. Probably a standard baseline graphics card and an 80GB Drive.

Nothing too dazzling but it will do the job. You could buy most of the parts off the internet of you wanted, That would make it even cheaper.

I'd focus on getting a good sound card, a good sized hard drive(160+), then at least 512 ram and 2 ghz cpu. Don't worry about the GFX.

It depends on how much music you intend to store on there but as for me, I've got an 80gb hard drive which is adequate as any music I transfer most of it to cd/Ipod. and then delete some.

- 512 MB RAM
- Pentium 4 ~2-3 Ghz
- Onboard graphics
- Onboard sound
- Decent sized hard drive (maybe two)

Dell has some pretty decent sales on right now that I would check out.

Fwqhgads is right, definitely check out Dell's website, they have some great offers on at the moment. I was going to buy one myself but it turned out my uncle had already bought a new pc for me that was slightly cheaper than the stuff on Dell's website so I paid him back for that instead.

They've got some great budget end of the market machines with specs that should be more than adequate for your music needs.
