View Full Version : Hey, hey, it's the Ska-Punk Thread: SKANKERS ONLY!!!

Okay all you skankers out there, this is where all discussion/reccomendation dealing with ska-punk will go. Hopefully this will bring the community together a bit more and allow those unfamiliar with the subgenre to be introduced to something new. :thumb:

Of course, let me explain what Ska-Punk is, just in case some of you are wondering what this is. It may not be completely accurate, but it'll give you the idea of what it is and what it's like.

Ska-Punk, or Ska-Core as it is also known as, is considered a sub-genre of Punk, and is a style used a lot by many Pop-Punk bands. As it's name suggests, it blends together Ska and Punk, by using the same beats, instruments, and feeling as ska, with the same aggression as punk. Ska-Punk usually/always includes brass playing and combines Jamaican-like rythyms with hard guitar chords and punk-like vocals. A lot of the music labeled Ska is usually fast and danceable, but it still keeps it's punk-like qualities.

-Definition and information by Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ska_punk)

Ska Bands:

- Less Than Jake
- Goldfinger
- Catch 22
- The Suicide Machines
- Reel Big Fish
- The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
- Common Rider
- Mad Caddies
- Big D & The Kids Table
- Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution
- I Voted For Kodos
- The Rudiments
- Streetlight Manifesto
- Bomb The Music Industry!
- Operation Ivy
- Leftover Crack

And more where that came from.

More will be added to the list as bands are mentioned. Also sense not all bands play nothing but Ska, I will also add songs by bands that are ska-influenced, along with links to the songs and websites that give more info on ska-punk.

This thread was made to conversate and contribute/exchange knowledge and to help those unfamiliar with this part of pop-punk and get them on a head start. Let's all try to keep this alive and not spam it or kill it.

:thumb:

Also if anyone is interested in any Ska albums, request them here and I will add them to the Daily Upload.

Big D And The Kids Table is all one will ever need.

Although How It Goes has departed from some of their punk roots (with no complaint from me, by the way), their stuff on The Gypsy Hill LP is nothing short of the best.

Oooh, and Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution.

And on a slightly less-good note, I Voted For Kodos.

Ska shows are also probably the funnest, nicest shows someone can go to. It has the energy and such of hardcore shows (well, kinda), but without all the assholes and annoying people. Ska fans are the best.

Yes, I know what skanking is. But...Skankers? That's lame. Ska people are known as Rude Boys and Rude Girls.

Everyone check out Take Sides (http://www.myspace.com/takesides), a local hardcore/ska band from around here. Good stuff.

The ska scene seems limited to me. All I ever hear mentioned are the bands already mentioned in this thread.

I always new them as Ska Kids, Spence. Rude Boys sounds like a gay pron.

Not that I would know.

Well, have you? There are the toasters, the skatalites, Streetlight Manifesto, and a few others. There doesn't seem to be much, though.

Those tend to be local bands, which tend not to be great unless they're uh...local to you.

Ska is a form of Jamaican music which began in the late 1950s. Combining elements of traditional mento and calypso with an American jazz and rhythm and blues sound, it was a precursor in Jamaica to rocksteady and later reggae. It is the predominant form of music listened to by the Rudeboy, Mod, and Skinhead movements, amongst others, with artists such as Symarip, Laurel Aitken, The Charmers and The Pioneers aiming songs at these groups as far back as the 1960s.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ska

Couldn't have put it better myself. Ska makes use of the "offbeat" to produce a very addictive, very dance-able rhythm.

Pretty much everything you need to know about Ska is in that Wiki article, and the articles leading off from it about the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd waves of Ska.

The wave most people here in Pop-Punk will be concerned with is 3rd wave; this is all LTJ, RBF, Op Ivy, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Big D, that kinda thing.

This happens to be my favorite genre.

In fact, I just yesterday bought Five or Six ska/punk albums I was missing from interpunk.

I reccommend Lightyear and Link 80. I just heard them recently, and they're great! Don't get confused when downloading Lightyear, because there's a couple of bands by the name.

My favorite ska/punk bands are Probably Big D, The First Suicide Machines album, and most stuff Tomas Kalnoky is involved in. Also I Voted For Kodos Is amazing. I'm a little biased with them, since They're from my hometown and they still play craploads of around me, but they're great. Really funny guys too.

I have the Johnstones/Keepin6 split. Do you have anything else by the Johnstones? Action is pretty much a perfect song.

Post-ska/laptop-punk is the best subgenre of the third wave if you ask me.

Agreed. BTMI, The Alcoholic Freshman and The Rick Johnson Rock and Roll Machine are starting the best trend in music ever.

Yay for hyperbole!

I listen to better ska then all of you!

Lies! Proof:

A bunch of good bands, too bad my last.fm plugin disables all the time and i forget to put it back in.

LIST WITH NO TOASTERS

For shame.

i guess the clash are kinda early ska maybe...

They were influenced more by reggae, but there isn't much difference between reggae punk and ska punk.

Leftover Crack are pretty good.

Leftover Crack are so bad... The guy who sings for them is so bad he makes Jeff from ASOB and BTMI sound like a choir boy. And their music isn't interesting enough to overcome his voice. Plus, according to Willey Willy (if anyone remembers him) they're total dicks.

Choking Victem on the other hand, had a few tracks where the singer wasn't on crack and the mixer was set up properly (Crack Rock Steady, 5 Finger Discount, 500 Channels).

I want him to e-mail them, since they are playing Warped Tour, to see if I can maybe get a backstage pass, or free tickets, or something.

Was it catch22? because i was looking for streetlight manifesto stuff, and this appeared, and the names of all the songs are SLM, and the album art it, but it sounds like C22, and the net says its C22

If you enjoyed streetlight and catch 22, i reccomend you check out Bandits of the accoustic revoulution. same kinda deal with c22 and slm, but accoustic, and very very good. They recorded stuff like Dear serigo, and Heres to life, along with songs of their own.

Hey, I was just thinking. I noticed that sometimes in the R&M, one of the regulars, Steerpike, does a weekly Spotlight on underrated artists under the rock and metal categories. I was thinking maybe each week, I could do a profile for underground ska bands, or we could take turns or something.

I don't know, I'm just trying to think of things to do for this place so there'll be something to look forward to every week perhaps.

Sound slike a good idea if done properly.

I'd recommend if it's weekly that it's not too long, just general band bio with links to official sites/myspace accounts and songs etc.

Good idea.

I'll make sure the write-ups aren't too long, these won't be FA's. Just simple band-bios to get everyone in the spirit of things. :)

Also Butler, I'm not sure if that'd work out . You'd have to have a talk to Brian about that, and considering we are testing out a new system, it won't be the absolute best time to try that anyway. Perhaps there can be another Google Mail account made, like "skaupload@googlemail.com" where people can contribute their ska material or something along those lines.

Right now I'm debating over if the first write-up should be on Leftover Crack or BOTAR. It'll probably lean towards BOTAR. I will also include a poll with 4 or5 other ska bands and for everyone to vote on who they would like the next write-up to be on. Anyone else who would like to do weekly write-ups is more than welcome to.

I love seeing Adequate Seven live. I haven't really given their new album a proper listen yet, but their new songs sound good live. Apparently they recorded their older stuff in such a way (with old tech) that they sounded heavier, so this CD was gonna come out poppier anyway.

But yeah, I love Ad7 live, wicked. Seeing them again in a couple weeks I guess....

Thats a good idea, but it should probably be real unknown bands.

LoC, RBF, LTJ, SM, BTMI, ASOB and ska bands of about their size are really well known.

If you tried to profile bands, you should only do bands that
a) have a full length album out (or 2+ eps)
b) have songs that someone can listen to (myspace, purevolume or website)
c) avoid saying people should listen to them because they're fun or good or have a good horn section or other non-specific compliments

I was told the lead singer of Lightyear Died? I'm not really sure, I've only recently gotten into them as well. There is another band called Lightyear as well... you want to make sure it's the right one.
