For some reason, when I try to access any of the folders on my EHD, it freezes and I have to restart it. I tried scanning for an auto fix (if that even works), but it found nothing.

Does anyone know how I could fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

What external hard drive is it make etc?
How many files are on it/size?
Have you tried using diskeeper to scan it?
Have you tried plugging it into another pc to see if it is yours that may be the problem?
Failing that I have a program called hard drive fixer, I can send you it in an email if you want.

It's a Maxtor 80 gig 7200 RPM
3.45GB are free, tons of folders. All of my music is on here.
No.
I've plugged it into friend's computers many times, and it's never given me this problem. It just started today. Nothing will open.
That would be nice.

Ok, I am at work at the moment, I will send you it when i get home. I will ask a few of the other guys in the office see if there is anything they can think to do to get it going.

EDIT: Have you tried running a chkdsk for the drive?

Start>Run>type in 'cmd'> then at the command prompt type

chkdsk driveletter: /r

And press enter. Obv change drive letter to the letter your external drive is .

Alright, I'll try that now. It's gonna take forever.

Thanks a lot.

Okay, WHAT THE HELL? It's going through and saying my music is completely unreadable, then deleting it. I just listened to some of this stuff the other day.

It just went through the A, B, and C folders (of my music) and deleted some stuff, that seems to be all it's doing. It also says "Windows replaced bad clusters in file \FOUND.000\1534.CHK of name <null>." I have no idea what that means, but could it have been part of the problem?

Also, what can I do to prevent this from happening again?

It could have been part of the problem, I had the same thing happen to one of my 250gb full of music, I don't think there is a lot you can do to get it back. As for preventing it in the future I would recommend looking into getting Diskeeper. And defragmenting every couple of days if its going to be in use a lot. That should help keep the drive in order.
How did it go did the diskcheck fix it?

Rats!

sounds like your disk is dead. lets hope you have a backup.

Yeah, I can access the folders now, but the certain stuff that got deleted is still gone. I'll check out that program and defragment every few days. Thanks.

Edit: I can only find a crappy trial version. Is this the one you were talking about sending to me? Any way you could get me the full version?

I hope you're being sarcastic.

:) Glad I could be of some help to you. The stuff that got deleted will have been on the bad sectors of the drive I rekon, So there wont be a great deal you can do about that. At least you didn't lose everything.

If you need to get a new one later, don't go with maxtor. I had an HD fail me before that was a maxtor. Go with Seagate or Western Digital.

Do you have it backed up Spence?

Nope. Do you mean to CDs?

And I plan on getting a new computer soon, so I can put my music on my C drive and then get a new external.

Seagate own Maxtor, So essentially they will be the same products now. Just packaged/labeled differently.
Personally I have never had a problem with Maxator drives.

Well, I don't have another drive. :-X

I'm going to. I've got everything picked out, it's just a matter of asking my parents to get it for me in a few days so it will deliver near my birthday. :)

I thought it went the other way around?

I use a maxtor HD in my external enclosure thingy, so far it's ok.

Nice, it's so much fun putting it together.

I have that keyboard. Its great. What about a mouse? or are you not fussed about what it is?
And XP Home? Why not pro?

EDIT: Micro cases are a right pain in the *** to build in, I'm sure you will have a lot of fun putting it together :p

Ooh, a micro? Not bad stuff. It ticks me off that I bought my 7800GTX 3 months ago for about $400. :(

I already have a Logitech G5. No need for a new one. :)

I dunno, should I go for pro? What differences are there?

I thought the same thing, but my friend got one of these cases a few weeks ago and he loves it. Most of the stuff I'm getting is what he has.

I aren't a big fan of Logitech mouses. I'm a Razer man all the way.

I don't think you'll need pro unless you spend tons of time doing office stuff on your computer. Which I doubt you do.

um dont get pro if you are buying it. its really not worth the extra however much. its called home for a reason. for now they are essentially the same with some slight differences in administration and networking in pro but nothing useful. the reason for the two was to introduce the idea. now they have saif vista will have at least six versions so thats what they wanted to get us used to by introducing. and these versions may have more difference.

That's stupid, I have seen the number of releases for vista, and I think there are 6. It just seems like another way to make more money by making minor adjustments to the OS and then re packaging it.
