I'm looking into getting a new snare, being sick to death of my standard Tama Rockstar aluminium snare (I believe its aluminium).
I want to try out some sort of wooden snare, and basically I want it to be a good crisp alrounder, capable of a nice loud crack and well defined ghost notes. I've come to like my snares tuned quite high for the style of music I play most, a good example of what I mean would be Rush's Test for Echo (the song) and Opeth's A Fair Judgement and A Grand Conjuration (or something like Lopez's snare on the Lamentations DVD).
I've found I could get a DW Collectors Snare made of Tamo Ash from a local auction website. I will test it out first, but before I do has anyone got any experience with this snare? Or are there any other suggestions?
thanks

His snare sounds amazing on that dvd.
Probably a thickish wooden snare, Amb/Amb combo.
Although Martin uses an emperor on the dvd, it's most likely the mixing that makes it sound super sweet

thickish being what 10 ply?
his whole drum sound is amazing. I was worried the DVD would have average sound quality.... how wrong I was. The lighting was annoying though... anyway, snares.

Mmmm, I was surprised when I saw that they played all of Damnation.
Not sure about plies, but I'd be willing to bet he has a pretty thick shell.
Check the Premier website and see if there's any artist info. It might show any snares Lopez has used

on lamentations lopez uses a PS3 for a batter, probably an amb for a reso, his drum looked like a 14x6.5, but it could have been 14x8

If you can afford a snare like that, then it might be a really good choice. I believe ash has a very nice high range, as does cherry.
If that snare doesn't turn out the way ya wanted, I'd suggest checking out Yamaha's Musashi snares at your local shop.

lol
that cracked me up... reminded me of a few nights ago when I was recording some friends doing a cover of Guns n Roses Don't Cry... the lead guitarist comes in, and listens to his take... half way through he says "did you know this was me, not slash?".
fricken guitarists.
anyway, I am going to get the snare, it comes with a case, and is second hand, but in great condition... just need to put together some cash for it.

Bubingaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
haha, just a suggestion....I think tama bubinga snares look incredible.
Of no use now anyways, but that DW snare should be quite good.

I really want to try out the bubinga drums, but I haven't seen a single drum made of one over here... It'd probably be something you have to order and wait quite a few months for (at least for me).
Can't wait to get it.. it'll be such an upgrade from my current snare.

I've only had Fig Newtons, not Figs plain.
They should make Lime Newtons, stupid Nabisco.

I want a wood snare like you wouldn't believe. I'm just over my steel one.
I was thinking of a birch snare, or maybe something a warm slap/pop.
Jose Pasillas' snare on Alive at Red Rocks is the kind of sound I'm lookin for
