I've got an ingenious plan to save costs on my custom snare drum: I'm going to get the ingredients [wood, throw off, hardware etc...] off the internet, and give them to Paul to construct for me. I'm thinking of ordering off www.rockler.com pieces of Purpleheart to be constructed into a segment snare. I did some maths, which I am unsure of, but I think for a 6"x14" Snare I'm looking at getting about 2.5 square feet [allowing for excess]. The pieces are 3/4" deep.
Is this correct?
If so, could I order 10 6"x6" Pieces and freight them over?
Will this be enough for Paul to work with?
I don't really understand the process towards to angle of cuts on the pieces..
I've figured out EXACTLY what I want:
7x14" Segment Snare
x 6" of the 7" will be Purpleheart Segments [3" Up, 3" Below]
x The middle inch will be Maple Segments
x 45/45 Bearing Edges
x Satin Finish
x 10" Lugs
x Single Point, one hole lugs [small and subtle as possible]
x Dunnett throw-off and butt-plate [small as possible]
x All Chrome with the best rubber gaskets I can get [silver colour if possible].
Internet.

I will. Does that seem to be enough wood? I Don't trust my calculations..

uhh... rockler is where most of the builders get their wood from anyway... you're not going to be saving much at all....
but just to play along you'd order one piece of wood that was at least 10' long, and send that to him. he's a big guy, he can cut it down to size, i promise.

I'm thinking it'd be cheaper for shipping if I got pieces, Chippy. Wouldn't that be the case?

o.O
you want to buy all the pieces, precut from rockler (=more cost for them to cut it when any builder/yourself can do that just as well), then ship them to someone else to make it for 'ya?
you might as well just build it yourself, hun :)

Why dont you just get paul to get the wood for you?

Well I plan on getting 6"x6" pieces shipped over, and then seeing how much he needs and keeping the excess to work with. But the point of the pieces being cut is purely from a packing perspective; its cheaper than one big piece by airmail across.
Postage with them cut like that was quoted at $45US approx, and $60US for one piece.

i'm not seeing why you're bothering sending wood to a guy who can get it himself w/o needing to ship... shipping is only extra cost to you.

Come on man if $15 is an issue.. you shouldn't be buying a snare drum. Let alon a custom one. Instead try saving for things you WILL need.. sticks, heads etc.
If a few dollars here or there is something that has to be kept in your mind, the words "custom" and "new drum" should be words you keep out of your mind.

I work hard and don't like wasting money when I could do something. I'd rather spend half an hour placing an order if it means I can buy two pairs of sticks for my troubles.
