View Full Version : Drum... pitches?

When I started drumming, one of the first things I read was that drums are instruments of indefinite pitch and this is why all sheet music for them uses a neutral clef. But lately, I'm seeing more and more interviews with professional drummers who say they tune their drums to certain pitches. So which is it? Are they or are they not pitched instruments? And if yes, are there general rules to get them to sound their best? For example, a drum of dimensions 'x' and 'y' sounds the best tuned to such-and-such a key. Thanks in advance.

You can tune a drum to a note, but it is really hard due to having two skins on it.

Your best bet is to tune your drums to the sound you like, and that you think go together.
