Hello everyone. I have a bit of a problem and it's quite the downer. I've been learning to sing recently, just doing warm ups, exercises, and singing along to some songs. Well, I got this idea a little while ago to listen to a song on my headphones and record while I sang along to get an idea of what should be improved such as tone and volume.
But on listening to it the sound of my voice shocked me. When you're practising you don't really notice because you're so focused on getting it right. I didn't like the sound of my voice at all. It sounds dry, boring, and almost toneless. Is that just me? Obviously you don't know what it sounds like so it's hard to answer but I know alot of people don't like the sound of their own voice. Is it just because I am brand new to singing? Would it sound better over music as opposed to a capella? Or should I take a hint by keeping my mouth shut and just sticking to keys.
Any help or advice would be awesome. Thanks everyone.

Oh, don't listen to him. I have the same problem too. You just have to get used to your voice.

I read somewhere that the sound of your voice even improves with practice. Is this true?

Well, For me, That was definitely the case.
Although, It could just be a confidence thing so...
I would definitely continue to practice. :thumb:

I would not suggest singing with headphones on. It's really tough to hear yourself over the music and try to sing in key. When you practice, you really need to hear your voice. I would even suggest singing through a PA or pump your voice through headphones. This way you get used to hearing yourself loud and clear and can make adjustments.

If your voice is in key then it is fine. that is your biggest concern, You get better at singing in key the more you practice and generally the musical you are and thus the easier you can pick up what is or isn't in tune by ear. You'll get better just keep trying

When you practice hook your self up to a PA. That helped me a lot. It alows you to show your voice to your ears straight on. Also realize that everyone has a niche in singing, you just have to find it. Even if you do suck, why give a **** if its fun. My drummer sucks at singing...worse than me and that says alot...but he trys to sing Rush anyway while drumming...I laugh but he has fun doing it, though he has head phones on so he cant hear himself.
Anyone know any good voice exercises? NOt that this forum is much of a conversation place....but hey, mabey someone will get bored and decide to give some awesome suggestion on crappy singing.
even if they were canadian

I tend to disagree. I have very good pitch, and I'm a pretty good site singer. However my voice simply sounds bad because of its inherent tone. I think it would be easier to start out with bad pitch, and good tone, than the other way around. Pitch is something you can listen to and fix over time, but tone is much harder to improve.

I agree you can't fix your tone really... but you can fix your pitch problems. I had major pitch problems when I started singing but I always had a nice sounding voice. And I'd like to think I'm a pretty good singer now

Just like with anything else you get better with practice. You can't change the way you naturally sing, but with practice you can shape it to where you want it.
I used to be terrible but I loved doing it, now I have a pretty decent voice. Good enough to perform with and not look stupid anyway.
