I'm sure there's been threads on this already...

You basically make your own creature and then as it evolves you can customize it. Eventually, you make civilizations and then take over planets and galaxies as well. Oh, and all the creatures that other people create are placed into your game. It's not online, but the creatures and their behaviors are imported to your game. It's a neat concept. Watch the video for more info. The maker of the Sims made this game.

I think it gets kinda "meh" when you start invading other planets and the game turns into a rts.
other than that, looks great and the idea of starting as a small tiny molecule is amazing. i don't think this type of game has been done yet.. has it?

This is a big win for us, for anyone really. My hopes is that they'll be compatible with the PC version so we can edit our creatures on the DS when we're out and send them to our universe.
"Formerly a PC-only release, a version of Spore will be heading to the DS. No release dates or other details were given outside of the confirmation of the upcoming games.
In the past, Spore creator and Maxis chief designer Will Wright had expressed interest in bringing Spore to the DS and other platforms."

I'm at work right now, so I'm unable to post links to videos. However, If you go to youtube or google video and type in "spore e3" or even just "spore" you should pull up, developer notes, in game-play shots.
The idea behind spore is you basically start out as a microscopic bug, the size of a spore , and evolve your way up the chain.
once you've evolved on to land, you can find other creatures that look the same of you(this will have takin several evolves to get to). From here it goes into a tribal phase, then a civilization phase, then a space race (you can terraform other planets, occupy other planets, and the like) you can meet up with other races and either war with them or make alliances.
your 'evolutions' are all designed by you as well...buildings are designed...hell this is probably the hardest game I've tried to explain. Just go watch the movies.

no doubt. but if you watch the e3's from like 04 it keeps getting BETTER AND BETTER each year they're working on it.
Unlike companies like blizzard, microsoft, etc who produce something 3/4 of the way to finish and then rush it to the market to appease the mainstream it appears that maxis are going to fully finish the game before it's released. Although, it may not be totally free of glitches, etc it's going to be almost flawless.

I've heard some cool stuff about it. Apparently, the potential size of the game is infinite, but it isn't as hard as it sounds for developers to make because they essentially give you the tools that they generally have to make the game that you want. Basically, they are giving you half a game, and its up to you from there. I might be off base a bit, but that is my general take on it. It's a cool idea. I hope it turns out well.

stages are too short and shouldn't even be stages at all but rather a natural evolution or something. rts elements in middle/later stages too shallow. game feels like a combination of the surface elements of a bunch of genres making it feel real shallow. gets repetitive. good thing i didn't follow the hype

I think it gets kinda "meh" when you start invading other planets and the game turns into a rts.
i posted this on first page... HOW I WAS WRONG!

Anything on the DRM nonsense people are flipping out over?
As I understand it EA imlplemented some DRM system by which you can only install the game a number of times before it ceases to work. Any truth to this?

I'm sure you can call EA and work around it. I don't have any problems with it.
Knifeboy
09-11-2008, 01:05 PM
Yeah, 3 times apparently, you have to call their support line if you want to install it more than that
http://www.amazon.com/Spore-Mac/dp/B000FKBCX4/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1221156267&sr=8-1
geeks respond by voting it a 1 on amazon, pretty darned effective protest eh
As usual, the DRM is only hurting the customers, the game leaked and the DRM was cracked before it even hit the shelves

It's a game though. You could just preserve the initial install and move it wherever you want.
Games don't install anything to the registry really nor does it "register" heavy files.
People do realize that right?

So I bought this on a whim today and I just spent the last 6 hours straight playing it...
I loved the cell stage, the creation stage was cool but I thought it was a little too easy to change the look of your creature- I mean, evolution is supposed to be gradual but you can change your entire creature in one edit. The tribe stage was fun but a bit easy for me and I stopped playing just after I started the civilization stage because I was getting a migraine from too much staring at the screen =P
All in all, a good game which will keep me entertained for a few weeks/months.

i got the space stage with one creation and then started over cuz it seemed needlessly tedious and i didnt feel like i got to play the earlier stages enough particularly the first two so i played another one up until stage 3 and then stopped it's fun but it doesn't have the depth to really get me hooked i dont think maybe the space stage will but i normally dont like space games
also in my first life i killed literally everything i saw as soon as i saw it up until the space stage where the game is suddenly telling me to establish a trade route wtf is that **** i dont trade i kill ****
in my second life i danced with critters until i was like halfway through and they stopped liking my dancing so i went on a killing spree
"call flock" is a ridiculously overpowered ability

also the civilization stage was ridiculous and disappointing

Yeah I was expecting it to be similar gameplay to that of Warcraft or Age of Empires but it was much lamer.
It felt to me like the further the game went on the more bored the programmers got with it.
I still like it though :)

space stage kicks a lot more *** when you get a fleet and go to war with people

When you go into spacestage, are you actually fighting against PEOPLE over the net, or are they just CPU planets?

cpu planets
but the creatures can be stuff you downloaded from other people and their attitude depends on how said person raised that creature

Aw, it'd be cooler if it was like a MMORPG where you could go find your friends and wage war on their planets.

Making your own stuff is great, and it's very well done, but it really only effects the game visually. You still have to swarm people with units in civilization stage, no matter how militarily strong your units are. Just depends on how many you have to storm it with.
I just doesn't effect the game as much as it should. ruins the point.

whats the difference between military and religious civs?
I played through once to space as a pacifist and am still building a space empire as a military civ but I didn't notice much difference.
apparently economic civs are different tho
Anglachel
09-18-2008, 09:57 PM
um you actually get more passive abilities depending on what you finish each previous stage as
check gamefaqs for all of them (I've done economic stuff and play space as a Trader, so all purchasable passive abilities are half price for me)
