View Full Version : Trouble connecting to the INTERNET

...on my computer at home.

I ran a scan the other day and it found a few viruses. I deleted them and as they were deleting, a message appeared saying that one of the files was a Windows file that was infected.

I deleted it; not thinking much about it.

That's when everything went to hell.

Now ... I reinstalled Windows so everything with that is fine. Some of the program files on my computer were deleted (as they were infected). Also, my internet won't connect. It says that it's connected but I can't get any of my internet browsers to connect to the web.

What do I do?

I know there's something to do with ipconfig in the DOS window (I think it's the DOS window).

Anyway ... please help. Explicit instructions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Here is a very layman solution; unplug your modem. When I built my latest computer I had the same problem. I tried everything. I finally called my ISP and that is what they said. Begrudgingly, whilst muttering under breath about their lunacy, I did it. Lo and behold, it worked.

Chances are, I won't be able to do that till Saturday then ... The modem is in my roommate's room and he keeps his door locked all the time.

Any other ideas?

Try pinging your modem, that should tell you if its a problem with it. The only difficulty is that I do not remmember if its not getting a response, but being connected that means it needs to be re-booted or the other way around.

Here's a seperate problem, not worthy of a thread.

My computer has randomly deleted Paint! I can't even find mspaint.exe

I also can't find character map. It's like they've just deleted them. All shortcuts to Windows Media Player have been deleted, I'm just lucky I have a 'Media' button on my keyboard.

How do I ping my modem?

When I checked network connections, it says it's connected (whatever kb/per sec it is).

And when you say reboot, do you mean the modem?

The problem with that is that my roommate is away for most of the week and the modem is in his room. I'll give the bastard a call and get him to reset it.

That SHOULD solve my issues, right?

Start - RUN - cmd.

In the prompt put in "ping xx.xxx.xx.xxx" where x's are your IP adress.

Then look at what packets it returns.

I'm not going to guarantee that rebooting the modem will fix the problem, it is a very possible solution though.

I do hope that's the only thing wrong. I hate messing around with my computer and this whole virus issue isn't helping things.

Thanks alot Cybergasm for your help (and to the others who had constructive help). I'll let you know if it worked either tonight, or on wednesday (the next time I'm back at work).

driver went bad? Perhaps reinstall the driver for your keyboard.

gort: scan with hijackthis, look for any LSP entries (O10 category I believe) and remove them with lspfix.

What system are you running?

And for Zack, go to RUN>winipcfg

If your modem is correctly installed, then it should appear as some connection other than PPP adapter. Try that.

Like Cybergasm said, you will probably need to reboot the router and modem. Maybe check for firmware updates for the router too.

Next time you find viruses on your computer, your best bet is just to do a System Restore.
