View Full Version : Political Music

Every year, there is a big music festival in St. Catharines called SCENE. It's (mostly) all local bands and it's a lot of fun. At this festival, there is a mix tape/cd exchange (I know, it's sweet) and they give out 2 or 3 prizes for the cd/tape with the best artwork. So this year, I'm going all out. I've decided to make a highly political cd with lots of linear notes, in which I'm going to write a short essay.
I'm working on the playlist and I really want to do it right. It's going to be about half music - half lecture and half of the music is going to be "lighter", like acoustic and folk music, and the other half heavier stuff like classic rock, rap, and metal. So I need all of you to give some suggestions. The only stipulation is that the songs can't be super-popular like System of a Down. Here are the songs I have so far:
Piebald - If Marcus Garvey Dies, Then Marcus Garvey Lives
The (International) Noise Conspiracy - A New Morning, Changing Weather
Bright Eyes - When the President Talks to God
Billy Bragg - Waiting for the Great Leap Forward
Billy Bragg - There is Power in a Union
Bruce Springsteen - The Ghost of Tom Joad
Johnny Cash - Drunken Ira Hayes
Remembering Never - Suicide Hotline on Speed Dial
Remembering Never - White Devil
Refused - The Deadly Rhythm (of the Production Line)
The Clash - White Riot!
The Clash - Spanish Bombs
The Clash - Washington Bullets
Woody Guthrie - The Dying Miner
Pete Seeger - Which Side Are You On?
Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia
Unearth - Black Hearts Now Reign
Pearl Jam - Do the Evolution
Ministry - No-W
Public Enemy - Rebel Without a Pause
I'll update this as more are added. I really appreciate the help!

Well, I really like Bright Eyes and that song reminds me so strongly of the folk protest songs of the 30s and 40s, so it's going on.
I'm thinking of making this a double cd.
Also, thanks for the suggestions?

The Kinks - "Some Mother's Son," "Yes Sir, No Sir"- about 80-100% of the "Arthur" album would be usable.
Love - "The Red Telephone"
The Zombies - "Butcher's Tale"
George Harrison - "Run of the Mill", "Give Me Love", "Beware of Darkness" (acoustic version would work nice if you want more folky)
Just some ideas.

I think rage are not only too obvious but their political message to me feels laboured and unclear.
They seem to be anti-america, as opposed to communist or socialist or anarchist or anything like that.
besides, their best song is clearly "know your enemy" ;)
Bullet in the head comes a very close second.

They've definitly left behind that label, esspeicaly with the last album, but their earlier stuff was total DYI, and they put the label on themselves. instead of starting an arguement with you, i will state one thing, and ask a question.
first of all, you are obviously on musician forums. that means you're saying your opinions are worth just as much as any other musicians. and since you say musicians know nothing, clearly you are stating that you know nothing.
second of all, is there anything in life that you like, or agree with?

No fully-fledged musician has anything relevant or legitimate to say about politics or how society should be run. Leave that to people with brain capacity.
Right.... More like none that you know of.

You might want to check out Neil Young's new album. I've heard a few songs from it and I like it.

Crass is boring. Chumbawamba and Flux of Pink Indians are better anarcho bands.

If your in the right mood to listen to an entire Crass album, they can be interesting. Too bad most people (including me) can't do that on a regular basis.
Check out Chumbawamba's last album, Un. Plenty of gems there.(Everything You Know Is Wrong, Be With You are two good places to start.)

That song, although fantastic musically, is ultimately incorrect. Carter was really quite guilty. The jury wasn't even all white.

I read somewhere that it was writen something like 8 years after the trial. Turning rebellion into money....
He WAS guilty? I thought they ended up releasing him after 19 years when they decided he wasn't guilty.
Doesn't change the fact that Hurricane > most songs ever though.

-The Weight by The Band (Kind of Political, not really, has points about the impossiblility of sainthood and religion)
What? How so?
And Danish, you need to re-think not putting I-Feel-Like-I'm-fixing-To-Die-Rag on your Cd

What he doesn't realize is that most trees used for paper are grown specifically for that purpose.

Bob Dylan met carter in Jail and only heard carter's side of the story. He believed carter and was inspired to write the song.

Ah, that makes a bit more sense. Can't remember where I heard that 'eight years later' story...

She hates her life,

I must say, one of the most patriotic lyrics I've ever heard, *spits*.
However, 10/10 for complete rock out awesomeness!!! \m/
