recently a few of my mates asked me if i could help them make a band to play mostly classic rock (Styx and the Doors type) and the occasional RATM. we realized that we needed a keyboard and the singer said he would take lessons in he schools' jazz band (this is mostly going to be a garage band). the thing is w know nothing about keyboards or synths. so i want to know some of the basics about them:
1. to play stuff like the Doors, RATM, and also an organ type sound when needed, would we need a keyboard or a synth?
2. all the inexpensive (no more than $300-$350 US) keyboards/synths i see don't say they have a 1/4" output jack to be plugged into a mixer/inexpensive amp. would we just have to mic one of those to the mixer/amp?
3. what # of keys would be necessary to play that kind of music?
4. when it come so polyphony, i don't know what the difference is between 16 and 32 note. what does that mean?

any other tips are welcome.

For $350 you won't get much. All that'll afford you is a cheap Yamaha or Casio, nothing will real quality sounds or effects.

No, you can get a Roland JX-3p. I had one, it was very versatile and I would recommend it; it being much better than any digital keyboard you can get today.
I got mine for $300 on ebay.
