Just rephrase your question.

I understand what he's saying. He wants to know how to place his pickups next to one another, but how far apart they're suppose to be.

Threadstarter, I wouldn't know.

Have you tried Google yet, and have you look at spec plans of P basses?

Threadstarter:

If they have the little alnico magnets sticking out, then just place them so that there is a string between each set of circles.

nah they don't have that, they are bartolinis

is it possible to make the overlap more for designs sake? Will it the effect the sound that much?

Well, as long as you make sure that the pickup sticks out far enough on either side to work. They're designed to be placed directly between 2 strings.

EDIT: By crossing them over more, you risk getting less sound from the G and E strings.

I could be completely wrong on this but I would assume that as you moved them towards the neck that 19mm would diminish and towards the bridge it would increase. as FMB pointed out, it's not an aesthetic decision so much as a functional one. The poles need to be centered on the strings. Maybe Bartolini can provide some data on the positioning of the poles for you.

The pickups should have a diagram with all the measurements, especially Bart's.

first it really just needs to be centered in between the poles. And a little word of advice. Put the pickup for the d and g strings closer to the neck.
