View Full Version : Can anyone name this bassist?

VinnySixKnuckles
06-15-2006, 12:09 AM
and the bass he's playing too. cuz i looked on the rickenbacker sight and couldn't find it.

anyway this guy is pretty good. i know paul says it's a racer x song, and i've looked into that, that's not the guy from racer x. neither is the drummer.

and if you don't know who he is. . . oh well. it's a good video.

His face while playing the opening thing is pretty hilarious.

That bass is a Warwick Fortress with a pickguard, by the way.

Aha, I was just about to say that.

That guitarist has the most retarded facial expressions ever.

Good player though.

paul gilbert is just a weirdo. i don't think he's trying to impress anyone or look hardcore or anything, he's just eccentric and shameless.

but yes still rediculous.

i doubt that's a warwick... the body may look similar, but look at the headstock.

Someone posted a Warwick Fortress with a pickguard just like that...weird, though, looking at the headstock...maybe it is a Ric. :amaze:

Yeah...I guess it is a Ric.

I didn't watch the whole video...only like...15-20 seconds. My bad.

Who also plays for Mars Volta now, no?

i know him as Juan Alderete

He changed his name to Juan, but he was still John back when he was in Racer X.

VinnySixKnuckles

are you guys even watching this video? that guys is not john/juan. and besides i read an article in bass player about john's basses, and he uses exclusively american made passive fenders.

http://www.racerxband.com/images/john2004.jpg

watch the video again and see if this guy makes an appearance.
these are not the guys of racer x, hence the name of the video is "paul gilbert playing. . ." rather than "racer x playing. . ."

let's just accept defeat and agree that the bassist in this video is just some unheard of friend of paul's?

i don't mean to get crappy if that's what it sounds like.

"Paul would later relocate to Los Angeles and enroll at what was then known as GIT(Guitar Institute Of Technology), but is now known as the Musicians Institute. After graduating from the school Paul was hired as an instructor. While at GIT Paul met fellow student John Alderete (Bass) and the two became friends and realized that with their talents, they could form a band like no other on the LA Strip at the time."

well sir i appreciate your feedback, and i'm not trying to be a spatula. but please see it from my perspective. . . i already acknowledged and ruled out the possibility that this guy is juan alderete, and everyone is trying to tell me he is. and when i deny that, i am shot down by retorts that don't make sense.

i would rather people just say "i don't know who the hell that guy is!" than try to tell me he's somebody that he just can't be.

and please don't damn my thread, i don't know if that was warranted.

I said it was John.

Because according to Wikipedia, Racer-x's official website, and Google. It is John.

EDIT: Unless for some reason Paul Gilbert, even though hes not in the band anymore, is parading around playing Racer X tunes without Racer X...

i know him as Juan Alderete

how else am i supposed to take that? hmm well i would guess you're saying that guy is juan alderete right?

i don't see how i'm being a douche bag.

and yes, it stands to reason that this guy is john. but this is just insulting. you guys aren't even thinking about what you're saying, you're just telling me all this because you looked it up and you trust your instinct so much that you're going to ignore the fact that i did just as much research to no avail.

and seriously naveed, why do you have a problem with me? is it because i don't have as many posts and that automatically means i have no credibility? i bet if some other guy that has been on here for years would post this he would get a much warmer welcome. and don't even deny it, you know that's how it works. and that's just not fair.

EDIT: in retrospect i think maybe you were saying "i know him as. . ." juan as opposed to john. talking about just his name. i guess i take that back. but i'm still a little pissed.

yea that's what i thought too. i didn't even think rickenbacker had a custom shop accessible in the states, and especially to some no-name. i don't even know how you could be a bass enthusiast with money if it's not your career. but whatever, maybe he's just rich.

You got pissy with Jody for no reason, thats now how we doit on the Bass Forums, you evidently have a lot to learn. Telling somone theya re wrong is cool, but you went and had a bitch fit about it.

right. i think this is the juan/john guy people are talking about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOW_-OESnq0

wow that performance is way faster and more dynamic. cool link, but i still stand by the fact that a white guy picker with short blondish hair and a Ric is not the same guy as a black haired puerto rican who still plays nothing but fenders finger style.

and actually, that video with john being so different than the link i sent, is almost proof that it's a different guy. this mystery guy is smoke on the water compared to juan!

again, i'm not trying to throw a bitch fit, seriously, but that just isn't the same guy. thanks for your time everyone.

and if after all that you still hate me. . . i give up.

but i am not denying that juan is the bassist of racer x. the debate is about whether or not this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3011321663930966226&q=racer+x&pl=true) bassist is juan. which he cannot be. please tell me someone around here knows what i'm trying to say. i apologize if you've delved into something far more complicated and petty than you thought.

It looks to me like he modified a 4003 or 4001 or had someone do it for him. There's NO WAY Rickenbacker would make a bass with Fender pickups. You have to be a freaking legend to get a custom bass from Ric, too, so that rules out the possibility of it being stock.

I said it was John.

Because according to Wikipedia, Racer-x's official website, and Google. It is

Dont make the mistake of assuming that the only bassist that Paul has ever played with is Juan.

This is taken from a fairly recent video, using Paul's hair as a reference, and since Juan has gone to waste his time with the Mars Volta, Paul has worked with lots of bassists since, as he is constantly making new albums.

Juan shouldnt have left someone as talented as Paul just to play with MV, but if it allows Paul to find new and better bassists to play with then its for the best.

I love paul and his style but I don't understand why he would play racer x songs without racer x:confused:

but at the end of the day TS, its only one bassist and one bass. theres absolutely no reason to get shirty with people. i mean, when you found out what and who the bass and bassist were what were you going to do. bum the bassist and steal his bass?

I don't quite do the little runs like he does, at least not as often nor as clean.

See how they start out chugging away on an F#, and then go up the neck a little? I don't do that as much as I'd like to.

I certainly don't do as much tapping as I'd like...I did however find a way to work it into an F3 song, and it rules.
