Is there a difference between the sizes of the bass? I have a longscale (34") and my friend just bought one that's only 29".

Shorter scale means less tension in the strings, your bass is normal scale, long scale is 35"

less tension in the strings is a result of shorter scale....short scale basses are for people with smaller hands, streches become easier

people also used to use short scale basses in those good old prog esque bands that every student and his dog set up back when it was big. they'd have a normal bass thumping away and a short scale as a more melodic solo instrument. you can string them with nylon coated strings as well for an interesting tone.

Actually, it would usually be the other way around. The short scale would be the one thumping away (less string tension = more double bass like sound) whereas the standard would be melodic soloing (more string tension = more piano like sound)

unless of course your short scale is strung with different strings and tunes higher... which is my only experience with short scale basses.

Shortscale basses can have as much tension as any other bass out there. It just depends on the strings.
Short scale basses tend to intonate more poorly.
