He always did talk about playing the bass in unconventional ways...

I have to admit, I'm slowly warming up to Wooten.

well the part that made me almost s**T myself was how he tuned back at the end

Which bass is that, is it a piccolo?

good rats
06-15-2006, 12:38 AM
I think it might be his tenor.

MAYBE, not sure though.

When I started watching that second video I was crapping myself. Poor fodera.

Jody LeCompte

I figured it was the tenor just because it's wooten, but when he starts playing it sounds REALLY high...

cmogawa

its probly his tenor and its probly the video quality that makes it sound high

doesn't it sound like he plays backwards in the end of the first video
CRAZY

That was awesome, I thought is was pretty amazing that he was able to pretty much retune his bass perfectly.

*vocoder.

Yeah, I know, it's pedantic, but there is a difference.

Meh, i was never really into Wootens solo stuff and 6 minutes of him abusing a boutique bass just hurts my brain.

Hehe, my guitarist friend has a vocoder. Hes also a rich cunt.

I thought it sounded high too.
The second video is loading realyl slowly, but the first is one of my favorite things I have heard Wooten play. For how famous he is for his DTing, I think his best music coems from fingerstyle.

i enjoyed that to a point, about half way through the second video the down tuned stuff started to sound boring though. still i thought that the concept was ace, basicaly using it just as a drum kit.

thanks, i don't see them used enough to know the difference myself.

It was kind of nice not hearing Vic's usual wankery-style of playing. Not to say that I don't like his DT-ing, but I've always enjoyed his fingerstyle much more.

Jody LeCompte

I've never liked Wooten's fingerstyle either. He always seemed to be moving and I hate that.

o_O you want him inanimate?

Jody LeCompte

Eh, I don't mean his actual phyiscal movement, I mean his playing.

You know how I feel about groove and how not playing is just as important as playing...

I agree, his playing is often too busy and not melodic enough.

Is anyone else amazed at how he managed to retune his bass while keeping beats going with both hands or is it just me?

I thought it was interesting when wooten and dickens tried a harmonized solo even though they werent even making notes anymore

that movie was just noise really, bailey was trying to keep some sort of groove going, everybody else was just kinda doing their own thing

I dont know how many times that videos been posted randomly followed by lots of hate. They are just having fun. They shouldn't have to be trying their hardest to impress random people on the internet every show they do...

The song in the first video is a Bela Fleck song from Three Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest. Not quite sure what one it is.

wow people don't be so hard on them

they were putting on a show. id love to see something like that once in a while. its good just as long as its not the whole concert, and after seeing wooten live i know he doesn't do it all the time and its mostly about the music but once after a couple of songs its cool to see how they enjoy themselves on stage just hitting that thing. i'm sure on video its not impressive too much but live its kick ***.

The first part of that video is the better half. Dickens takes a really tasteful solo....unfortunately ruined a minute in by double thumbing obscenity but he can shred it up pretty well with fingers and it still is listenable.

Overall there really is a lot of Wooten bashing going on. I guarentee none of you who are bashing him have seen him live, judging from some of the comments that are being made.

yes it can sound good i beleve that
but from my experience it didn't work out to good (well it was ok)
but i dont think it went anywhere it was just a jam

I watched the videos that the threadstarted posted the other day, and I must say that I quite like it. I just wish that they were all put into one video, so I could see it all the way through without having to click links.

The idea of what he was doing was pretty wicked, and then him retuning was ace. I haven't heard/seen Wooten play anything in quite some time. It was quite nice.
