ok, so, an amp i was looking at (peavey 400 series) puts out 210 watts at 2 ohms. so does this mean, that if i put a 2 ohm cab, i get the 210 watts? and if i put two 4 ohm cabs, does that make 2 ohms?

There aren't too many no. But there are some sweet combo's out there. I love Peavey + Ampeg. Ampeg has a 410 on 4 ohm.

question + bump
how much wattage would a 4 ohm cab get if a 2 ohm cab got 210? is there a math equation for that?

It doesn't work out to half power like some think. It would be about 140 watts. at 8 ohms it would be about 90 to 100 watts.
Electronics are a strange thing. Also, remember that these power ratings are RMS.
Converting from RMS to peak power is easy, here's the formula.
P(rms)=P(peak) X 1.414
Where P= power
Thus, an amp puting out 210 watts rms would put out roughly 296 watts peak.

ok so, assuming i get a 4x10, either avatar or ampeg at 2 ohms, along with the peavey head, should i be good to be heard over a loud drummer?
also, what do you think of the amp JP? have you played it? (i totally trust your opinion on these matters)

Those are the real early Peavey Heads. Mine was made in 1978. It's actually quite loud. It's also very easy to use and sounds great. I run mine through an EV 4x10 that runs at 8 ohms, and it's plenty loud. I would recommend a 4 ohm cabinet though.

Isnt your equation a little backwards, JP?
would it not be
P(peak)=P(rms) X 1.414
In doing that equation, my 120 Watt amp would only produce 84.9 Watts peak.
