Does anyone else here dispise the vocals in most bands today? I listen to alot of metal but those horrible screams, growls, and ghastly gutteral noises in most bands just ruin the usually excellent guitar, bass, and drum work. Same goes it most punk, although I tend to stay away from that stuff anyway. Not only does it not sound good, it doesn't even make you think "Wow, these guys are serious." It's like "Dude, WTF are you doing? Do you know how silly you sound?"
I pose this question; why can't metal bands just SING anymore? Just because you're going for a heavy style and edge does NOT rule out normal singing.

Just because you don't like it does not invalidate all the hard work, practice, and technique involved in harsh vocals.
So quit crying about death vox and listen to something else.

No, it makes you think that. Don't pretend to speak for anybody.
I actually am learning both clean singing and harsh vocals. Both are legitimate styles, but one is better than the other in certain context. The fact that you can't even lend any respect to that fact isn't exactly flattering for you.

Yea, you're right. I guess I do speak for a very small population. It's not right for me to bash, I'm not trying to offend people. It's just a very strong opinion I hold. I do more the most part like Opeth vocals, I would say they're one of the few exceptions. What all is involved in learning to sing like that?

It's essentially a process of learning how to control your breath. If you do it wrong like Alex from Atreyu or Matt from Trivium, you will wreck your voice. If you do it right like Quorthon of Bathory, you can keep going for several hours without tiring your vocal cords. Merkaba can explain it better than me.
Not everyone is going to enjoy harsh vocals the first time around. But when you get right down to it, it's no different than turning up the distortion on your guitar.

I tried that once. Coughing fit. Then I found out you cold paralyze a vocal cord that way and promptly swore it off.

Clean vocals are great when done well, but they can be done poorly the same way that the hundreds of kids who try to scream in their bands do it poorly these days. It's just that screaming is a big trend at the moment, so with all the kids trying to do it, its easier to notice.
Bad vocals are a sad thing to hear :(.
Worst bad vocals I've ever seen was a guy who was singing a metal song, and had a page of lyrics typed out in front of him, but the entire thing sounded like "gurghgurghrarghaaa". He was definitely the bad end of that vocal style. I've seen it done great though, but rarely by local bands.

See, the kind of edgier screaming I like is Nine Inch Nails, Damageplan, Slipknot, Marilyon Manson, etc. I think that it fits in certain parts of the song but when it is done poorly throughout the entire song it seems a bit monotonous.
I hate saying names but their is this local band in my area called "Murder in E Minor" are are a pefect example of this vocals. Look them up on MySpace. They're doing good though, touring in New York which really puzzles me. Maybe I'm just a bit too old school for music today.

Ironically, Slipknot's vocalist has terrible harsh tone.
Lee Dorrian of Cathedral and Petri Lindroos of Norther both have much better harsh vocals. Lee was formerly a growler in Napalm Death, but has slowly turned to more of a snarl than a growl.

The main thing I don't like about people trying to growl/scream their vocals is that they lose the ability to clearly enunciate things. If someone can't understand your lyrics, why bother having any, is how I see it.
That aside, if it is done well I like, but it is done poorly more often than not. It gets tiresome pretty fast though I find.

This is one of the reasons why I like The D and QOTSA. Black has a solid set of pipes, and Homme has never once even growled, and has an extremely creamy falsetto. Certainly, though, I much prefer vocals of old-school rock bands. Only a few singers today can really belt like Boston, Deep Purple, or what have you.

I can usually stand harsh vocals as lnog as they are not the vocal poitn of a song and the instruments are good. But I really hate it when you cannot tell what in god's name the singer is saying when they're are gorwling/screaming/snarling. That's why I loved Matt Sadows old screaming style because it was not very hard to figure out the lyrics on most songs after STST.
