Hey there guys.

So, im now in my last year of school (6th year, 6th form, whatever) so have just about nothing to do, so im brining my bass to school almost everyday and just playing it when I got nothing to do (2 thirds of the day).
Anyway, I do quite well playing with my guitarist and drummer mates (and some weird mandolin/bass duos) but I got a mate with a trumpet.

So, I was just wondering, does anyone know any awesome trumpet and bass duos? And if you have a tab for it...it would be even better.

Thanks in advance.

http://www.michaeldimin.com/books.htm

get the book 'The Chordal Approach" it teaches you how to take jaz standards and turn them into duets consisting of bass+ another instrument

Malaguena, but with bass instead of classical guitar.

flea said when he plays bass he really plays it the way he would play on a trumpet. like he thinks about notes not as frets on bass, but as notes he plays on the trumpet.

nothing to do with what you're asking but i thought i'd just put it out there :D

His basslines would sound retarded on a trumpet...

the concept is effectively useless unless you use it

although a lot of marcus miller's playing seems to sound almost vocal. his melodic parts, at least

ok, lemme pick that one apart for a minute...

it's useless... as in it can't be used.... unless you use it..... riiiiiight...

i was referring to flea's idea being pretty much useless for him since he doesn't follow it himself

This is kinda OT, but I once was at a jazz clinic with this trumpet player that was talking a lot about harmonic structure. He said that the best way for horn players to understand the general contour of the chord changes was for them to play walking basslines on their instruments. The guy then went onto demonstrate a fast bebop walk played on the trumpet, which actually was quite impressive despite the easier facility of the trumpet, and explained to us that when he first attempted to learn how to walk, it really garned a newfound respect for the bass players beyond their essential rhythmic role in the jazz combo.

My point is that it can really broaden your musical horizon if you approach your instrument, for study purposes of course, from the mindset of another.

I second the reccomendation of ska.

(OT: My uncle can play bass and trumpet at the same time. It's pretty impressive.)

Havic i know what you mean...

My teacher when i first started playing made me listen to Alot of Trumpet stuff, and told me to think that way...

now some will say its not the same, but now i think of my bass like a do with my guitar, my approach on guitar is completely different then on bass...

But playing the chords in different inversions shows me different places for arpeggios, plus i hear every note in the chords now...

I look at guys who tap, as like really benefactors of this... its like they're playing a damn piano... thats thinking outside the box... in awya atleast

First: How the hell does anyone know whats going through Fleas mind when he writes other than what he tells people? How can you listen to any line and say "Oh well so and so was thinking this so he did this." You can't. =/

Secondly: As far as a trumpet/bass peice. Theres been alot of threads for so and so/bass duet peices but I honestly believe unless it's for a recital or something of that sort that it's better for both players to improvise.

exactly. and if he says he likes to approach his playing through the concept of the trumpet, then i'm going to believe him obviously.

drummers are always a problem.

i'd say have a go at walking away by catch 22. ace trumpet and bass intro.
