I would just like to get a few opinions on your favorite basses, I am in the market to buy a new bass and have always wanted a MM Stingray but i am kind of unsure if it will suit me best; I am in a band and we play RATM, RHCP, Deftones, Foo-Fighters, Tool, as you can see we kind of play a bit of a range of music that forces me to constantly change my tone. A few basses that i am considering are MM stingray 4, another Fender P Bass unsure of the model at this time, A Fender Jazz 24 i know its not american made but i played one at the music store a few months back and really wanted to take it home with along with a spector but i am also unsure of the spectors model. Please keep in mind that all of these basses that i am considering are American made. I am looking to spend 500- 2000 dollars on a new bass. I am gonna be buying a new bass amp soon too and i am either gonna get another GK or go Mesa Boogie. I am pretty much just asking for someone to help narrow down my search for a new bass.

You shouldn't limit yourself to just American made. Good basses, hell yea, but it still limits you. Just play a bunch and see what you like.

i would go with the stingray.
dont be fooled by the one pickup, it has a wide range of tones. you might also look at the sterlings, they have a parallel/sc/series switch that really broadens the range of tones
you could also now get HH or HSC models.

that said, i also really like jazz 24s, and they are a good deal cheaper too.

Well i have been messing with some Wooten lately and thats what i loved about the Jazz 24 as it made it alot easier to play some of his style and was pretty easy to tap on.

stingrays are nice...... any american fender i would take, but i'd definitely prefer a jazz sooo.....

fender jazz > stingray > fender precision

schecter > everything imo, but u never mentioned them so i jus figured i'd leave that out of the topic

'Rays are good for everything.

I want to buy a HH or a HS Ray. or get a custom made with a MM humbucker and a 51' P pup.

With that kind of price range you should consider getting more than one bass.....

Nah. Why spend money on a bunch of on a couple of lesser instruments when you can get one very nice and very versatile bass.

Oh, and if you're looking at a Stingray, you might as well go for the Sterling, which is considerably more versatile in tone, in my opinion.

i like my ibanez BTB 450 QM
4string 24 fret neck
18volt pre amp

the thing about this bass that got me is the eq
mid boost/cut , low boost/cut, high /boost/cut, master volume. and pick up blend

i dont have to touch my amp's eq

i think they go for about 700$

http://www.ibanez.com/guitars/guitar.asp?model=BTB450QM

but thats just my choice
play as much basses as u can
stingrays are pretty nice from what i heard of them

I would look into some spectors (the US made ones are nice, but damn the Euro ones are even nicer) and G&L (fender on steroids).

first rage album= musicman stingray

flea= always has a stingray handy

tool= justin chancellor uses wal basses and a stingray on occasion.

i would say the stingray or sterling would be your best bet.

Wow thats a sweet looking Ibanez, I personally know a guy who used to always want a mm but after owning various basses he says that he asks himself that if its in his head that they are a very well playing bass, this is coming from someone who plays a warwick thumb. Well I have been looking at alot of Stingrays myself and i am wondering if there is anything that i should know about when choosing one?

But those things as far as looks go give MM a bad name imo.

My Schecter Stiletto Elite is amazing, it really is. The EMG-HZs are very good for slapping.

But my dream bass (right now) is a Music Man Bongo. Ugly shape. But it sounds so ... so incredible. That's the only word I can think of for it. It is definitely the best sounding bass I have ever played.

Also, you know. Spector.

Erm....not really...

Although I find them much more comfy to play than Rays. Bongos are ace too, especially when they have a jazz bar in the neck.

museic

stingrays are cool basses.. i own one but i havent played it in a while. the tone is a bit too tacky and not rich enough.. now i use my fender jazz bass with status neck and bartolini pups.

the bongos are one hell of an awesome bass especially with a jazz pup in the neck as chris k said..

i would go for a bongo

well im going to order a Stingray 4 from musiciansfreind in two more weeks, because there is more that i want to order and i want to get it all at once. I am really wanting a tube amp and I am loving the sound of those ampeg 8x10 cabs, for tens they have a little low end there and damn they sound good, but my big question is, i know that if im gonna buy one of those cabs i will need atleast a 600 watt solid state for it to sound good, so next comes my conclusion; if im gonna use a tube amp to run that cab how many watts am i gonna need and also is there a head that anyone recommends? I am a mesa guy and would love to have another mesa, i like the M 400+ and the Mpulse 600, do think that a Mpulse 600 would run that cab nicely? Or are there any cabs and heads that you guys recommend me trying out, I do mic my bass but sometimes for last minute shows and for playing outside gigs i need way more power than i have now and I am wondering what to go after, and i want something that can handle a low B. I am looking to spend 1200 - 1800 bucks on a amp and cab. Right now i am using a GK backline 250 head with a Avatar 4x10 cab and the cab with the eminence speakers really sounds great and i like it, as for the GK head the sound is good but once you push it a bit it drops off; yes i know that the backline series is GK's worst but i was low on money when i bought it.

PS. You gotta love that warm tube driven sound, joe from chevelle has it and damn it pwns.

When choosing a bass, go by what YOU like best. What feels, sounds, and looks great to you. You shouldn't care what other peoples favorite bass is. Their favorite might not be good to you.

Try many different basses out, don't just jump into it.

It took me a while to find my favorite bass, which is a Yamaha Attitude.

Anyone ever play through a Genz Benz head?
I just went to the music store today and was playing various basses through a Genz Benz GBE 400 hooked to a ampeg 410 cab and a Peavey 15", and this thing sounded pretty damn good; i was very impressed with how well it was pushing the two cabs, at first i thought it had to be a hybrid because of the tone that i was getting out of it especially with a new MIA fender Jazz, the guy came over that works there and cranked it up while i was playing and he said he cant believe how well that it sounds and neither could i. I have owned 3 different amps now and they are a GK 800RB the old one, A mesa boogie mpulse 600, and a pos GK Backline and the mesa by far has been my most favorite because ever since i got rid of it i have been wanting that tone back and the Genz benz was way warmer than both of my GK's.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Peavey Cirrus.... I love mine.

If you like the (narrow, flat) necks on Ibanez basses, but want better electronics and more tone possibilities, they are the way to go. The 35" scale is also an advantage if you are a 5/6 string player... keeps the low B nice and tight.
