HOW DOES IT WORK..do i turn it left or right to raise the action? do i need ot take the strings of first. HELP

actually i've been wondering this myself. I just got a new bass upright and it has an adgustable bridge. and i like mine much lower

clockwise should lower the action.
and you neednt take the strings off, just detune them a fair bit (but not too much.)

thanks thats what i was thinking. The bastards at work found an old upright from when the school was reasonably new. they had it restored a bit and then the kids who wanted it for this year have changed their mind so as the only bass player on staff i get to look after it (ie keep it) until another student wants it. I've had their other shi.tty upright for the last six months. Problem is they gave it to me right as my uni exams and major assignments for the semester were due.
