View Full Version : Problem With Batteries!

Alright here's the deal, the battery for my bass's preamp died, and I went out and bought some batteries for it. When I put these new batteries, that are a different brand (Duracell Ultra), in it, my bass wouldn't make any sound. So I tried out a different battery brand, Energizer, and my bass still wouldn't make any sound. I then tried out a different battery brand, Fuji, and it still wouldn't make any sound. I put the original battery back in, and it worked again, but died shortly there after because it had already run out of juice.
I've used the same battery for the last three times the battery needed to be changed, but since they weren't available I just bought the new/different ones. I have always used Alkaline batteries, if that helps.
Anyone have a clue as to what's going on?

That's really really weird. What kind of bass is it? Call and e-mail the company and see what they have to say about it.

Yea, tell me about it. Good idea, I might have to do that if I can't find an answer.:(
It's a Dean Edge Q4 by the way. Damn pieces of crap.

Are you certain that you're putting the negative and positive poles of the battery in the right positions?

I'd be impressed if he managed to klick the battery in if he got the poles the wrong way round

that's actually crazy.
are you sure your "new" batteries work?

The battery holder on Dean Edge Q series basses will accept the battery either way.

Really, bizzare

^^^Not really if you've seen the type of holder they use. Please note that while the holder will accept the battery in either direction it won't work in any position but the correct one... which is what I assume might be the problem that the threadstarter is having.

I'm 1000% positive I put them in the right way, and I'm positive my new batteries work because I tested them. Besides, what are the odds that 4 different new batteries don't work. :p

Electronics don't know or care if there is a different brand of battery hooked up to them. All they care about is that the battery is puting out enough voltage to power it, it is hooked up to the voltage supply the correct way, and all the electronic components are in the circuit and working fine.
They don't just decide on their own that, "we don't want to work with Duracel batteries any more, we just want Energizers". Electronics just don't work that way.

Yea, I know, that's why this doesn't make any sense to me. Would it be possible that the new batteries are putting out too much voltage and causing it not to work? I'm really confused here, this is just plain weird.

There's a reason why they are called 9v batteries.

yes but cheaper batteries often put out less volts then stated. as long as it is reasonably close to 9v it passes as a 9v battery

I know sh*t about electronics, but I'm guessing prolly something in your bass is not working properly. The reason why your dead battery makes it work could be because there's low voltage and doesn't overload a certain circuit or whatever. But maybe with full charge the bad piece just gets fried.

stupid thing to miss but
is the volume pot on 0 ?
i have been know to do that
like plug in my bass and if have no sound and freak and open up the pickguard and do all that to find out the volume was on 0
well hope u figure it out

I do that all time. :p Thing is, you shouldn't do it for more than a split second.

Yea, it could be it. I'm gonna have to find a new battery of the one that made my bass work, and then test it out with a voltage tester, and then compare it with the rest of the batteries. Also, I was inspecting the connecters on the negative side of each battery, and they seem to differ from the ones on the battery that works. In some cases it's barely even noticable, but in another they're completely different. Maybe that has something to do with it, which would explain the different brands deal. I don't understand because the other batteries should still work.

Man, I wish it was that.:p I've done stuff like that before. I plug into the headphones jack input on my amp a lot, and then think there's a problem with my amp or my bass. That gets a little embarrassing.

Yeah, it can cause a stroke or something apparently by offsetting your hearts rythm.
And to the guy whos freind bit into a battery, was it powder or acid?
Either way your freind must've been wasted, what was he drinking, I want some.

Just for fun, how much money have you already wasted in batteries?

Around 19$ on batteries that won't work on my bass. :( But compared to people that have effects pedals and more than one active bass, that's probably nothing. :p
