View Full Version : Learning to play any scale - any key
fishingforbasses

I know a few guitarists who can play anything you throw at them. If you know the Major scale, and all its notes in ::Insert key here::, you can play any possible scale (Seeing as how every scale is built off the Major scale, directly or indirectly...)
??? Does anyone know any "tuts" or online resources that can assist in this process???
I began integrating theory and my playing about a year ago. Lets put it this way, I am not a theory person, and I know it will take me atleast TWICE as long to learn this than someone else. Learning Sheehan tapping will be easier than this (I can already sheehan tap...not perfectly, but quite descently...)
lol thx for the help

We've got a lessons and resources section. Look in there.
Also, try Googling some stuff. Buy music theory books. Any type of medium like that is helpful.
I'm from Saugus, MA. Where are you from? Just curious...always happy to see another Bostonian MXer on here.

Unclear, do you mean that Sheehan is the one who adapted the guitar style of tapping to the bass first?

As far as theory, get a teacher that knows his theory.

Sheehan developed his tapping style before Van Halen came out. He heard Eruption and was surprised because he thought he was the only one doing it.

You obviously haven't listened to very much of his music, or if you have you don't know what you're talking about. The only song I can think of where he does that is NV43345.

He also claims to have gotten the idea for two-handed tapping from Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, who used his right hand index finger to tap a note on the fretboard of his guitar at a concert Billy attended.
Psh. He only stole it from ZZ Top.

Yeah, he saw Gibbons tap one note and he took it from there to make pretty much the same thing Van Halen did, but on a different instrument.

i can't really agree with that actually. So what if his avatar is of sheehan, it's still ok to like crap bassists. Look at all the people who love Mark Hoppus, Mike Dirnt and Flea (i'll regret saying this). Some people acknowledge that they're not as good as Jaco or Wooten but they still like them.

You become as famous as those bassists (especially Flea, but Dirnt too) then start talking trash. Those two bassists got famous writing very good, if not always hard, bass lines, and then playing them solidly on stage with amazing energy. They are not crap.

In my opinion, music is a way to "move" someone. When someone hears a song like Crazy Train, it can move them to head-bang, sing along, etc. When someone hears a song like The Ytse Jam, it can move them to be amazed at the musicianship. If it makes you think, makes you cry, makes you jump around, makes you remember, makes you want to excel at your instrument, makes you drive faster, if it makes you feel better than you do when you're not listening to it, THAT is good music.

locran has a flatted 2nd flatted third, flatted fifth, flatted sixth, and flatted seventh (this is off of the top of my head). If you played the locrian mode you'd be fine i think becuase the bebop scale has a flatted fifth. I'm sick and tired, so i could have made an error, but i think you'll be fine playing G locrian.

actually i said what i though about his tapping and you said i "didn't know anything." I think his tapping is sub par, especially on the right hand. There are a lot of limitiations if you want to tap his way. You can only do so much with the right hand when you're only using one or two fingers, compared to using a whole hand.

If you don't know what you're talking about, it means that you are speaking about one particular subject (Sheehan's tapping abilities, in this instance) that you haven't looked into enough to properly talk about. bebop major has a 5, a flat 6, and a nat 6. so in minor
itd be a regular minor with a minor 7 and a major 7.
