I didn't want to say anything about this because I wanted to wait until it was completed. Here's my latest Jazz style bass. I built the neck and body, and painted it. The body is Alder, the neck is Maple which has a bit of a flame to it, and the fretboard is Rosewood. The production models will have a different headstock shape to them. I did the fender style headstock because I was experimenting with making it a bit more swoopy.

The bass has DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups in it. I will probably be moving the output jack to the side of the body and puting some sort of EQ in it. I'm designing one for it now.

All the hardware is classic Fender style. This model, named the Blizzard, would be the classic Jazz Bass style in my lineup.

The last picture shows my uncle holding another Jazz Bass style I built a while back. This will be more the custom Jazz style. It has Basslines Quarter Pounder P/J pickups in it and a 3 band EQ with mid sweep control.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. But, thanks for the complement.

BTW, I made the pickguard also. I had a blank piece of B/W/B pickguard material lying around.

JP, that Blizzard is amazing. You certainly have a gift. Honestly, I'm considering a custom bass right now (once I get money, that is). I'm strongly considering you.

Thanks all. Just one question. Are they possibly SX quality? Heck, I mean, before I shoot for Alembic quality, I at least have to hit SX quality. Since deadautomatic said I never showed him anything built by me that was SX quality, I have to hit that mark first.

It looks like a very standard jazz bass. Sorry to be a bit critical but I think the logo could do with some work, I could really easily see the sticker lines :(

I wanna see some jazz basses with loads of knobs and exotic woods

Don't really know. What makes Lakland, Sadowsky, or the countless number of other Jazz inspired basses out there better than the rest?

I do plan on doing them with different body woods, pickup configurations, EQ's, bridges, etc.

Besides, that last pic of the Jazz with my uncle holding it, I made that bass from scratch back in 1980. That's way before anyone started making souped up Jazz basses. It was before Lakland, Sadowsky, and all the others. It was also one of the first ones with a P bass pickup in the neck position instead of the Jazz bass pickup. Also, it was the first Jazz (besides Marcus') to have an EQ in it.

How much would it cost you to make me a bass that is top of the range Sadowsky quality? 4 string jazz, two single coil pickups, preamp - I'd like to know how much I'd be paying for the Sadowsky name opposed to the bass itself

When we're speaking about ideas, there is nothing wrong with you :thumb:

Well.. I asked the question because you don't want to make 'another jazz bass copy'. I mean: that's been done a lot. You've got to come with something special for it.

Change something in the looks.

That looks amazing. I like how the light hits off the fret wire and makes sparkles. It would be nice to see it in some other colors, and different knobs(not a fan of the standard knobs on jazzes). Oh I also had an idea, not sure how easy it would be for you, but make a sliding pickup, like in your Gibson, for the jazz. That would be sweet.

Very nice. Very Fender, but still nice.

Build a 6 string jazz, swamp ash, neck through, 24 frets, natural finish, then we'll talk!

Well, it looks like a Jazz in my least fav. pickguard/body color combination. I can't really comment on anything other than that and the fact that the decal looks like you stuck a few stickers on your headstock, though it looks like you did a good job with everything else. How does it sound?

Jody LeCompte
06-14-2006, 01:31 AM
JP: I love your basses but your headstocks need some work. They alway seem just a tad bit off.

I'd still gladly weild one full-time though. :thumb:

EDIT: I agree with LEC, build a jazz sixer and I'll be at your frontdoor with 1200 easy.

I dont really care so much about the body.

I want a jazz tone on a six string.

I want both... gotta be 35 inch scale tho... a B with anything else is uncivilized.

Jody LeCompte

Im not so hot on the jazz looks but I want a sixer with the warmth and punch of a jazz instead of sterile and modern like most sixers.

mastrrbasser
06-14-2006, 05:27 AM
I'm on the same boat as you. it's hard to come along something like that on a budget. Most sixers that are available to us have the active preamps that in my opinion make the tone a little too snappy. I'm actually thinking of eventually taking the preamp out of my schecter and getting some passive duncan soap bars in place of the EMGs. I love everything about that bass: the feel, the balance, the action, the playability, the string spacing, but sometimes i can get the tone i want, sometimes i can't. I would really like to make it passive. I can get a better growl out of a bass if it's passive.

blizzard
06-14-2006, 07:51 AM
I completely approve of the bass and name :thumb:

That is incredible (though maybe not up to SX standards) <3
I would most definately post that on TalkBass right away.

Just quickly did you name that bass not only because you wanted it to fit into your Winters Image but also because I asked about Jazz basses the other day?

Also, gorgeous bass.
