View Full Version : How Multiple Genres Work

This feature is still under construction

- Each band can now have a secondary or tertiary genre. Please be spare with these. The purpose of having multiple genres is not to overclassify bands but to provide references for bands that are truly genre-spanning. An example of this would be a band that changed its sound over its career, or a band that sits at the crossroads of a sound. (Are Nickel Creek Bluegrass or Pop? They're a bit of both)

- You can specify these genres via the band edit pages, currently inactive when submitting a new band for the first time to avoid too much complexity

- You can't choose one of the 'main' genres for a secondary or tertiary genre - This is about increasing the classification, not about cross-listing every band on the site. Be particularly careful with Alternative / Rock and Rock / Metal

- Cross listed bands will have albums appear on the appropriate SUBGENRE page for the secondary or tertiary genres.

Example:

Band: Office
Genre: Indie Pop
Secondary: Pop Rock

You'll find the album on the Alt/Indie Page, the Indie Pop Page, and the Pop Rock page, but NOT on the Rock page. This is to preserve some genre integrity.

- Cross-listing isn't active in all parts of the site yet, please be patient

- I will never add another genre classification for each band, 3 is more than enough.

This is pretty much exactly the way I was hoping you'd do this. Well done :)

So, Radiohead= Alt Rock and Electronica correct?

This is great. Now bands like Opeth and Dream Theater can be in both the metal and progressive genres.

This is an excellent idea and something that was frustrating to me. Now it's solved. Thanks. I have reviewed multiple albums by various artist, but sometimes their work doesn't exactly fit the genre they are associated with. So the album/artist is not fully and clearly represented. Now the bands/albums will be better defined for the reader. And of course we can change current listings also, I would think.

Can I ask how the pie charts will work in this whole mess?

Can I ask how the pie charts will work in this whole mess?

My question exactly.

Question: Should the most recent genre progression be the main one?

For example, Thrice started as a Hardcore band, but are now more in the Post-Hardcore corner. Should the initial starting point Hardcore be the main genre then, or the latest station Post-Hardcore? Just so I get the intention of how it should work 100% :)

I'd say the most recent, yes.
