View Full Version : News Mods

I've decided that in order to boost the news section at sputnik, I'm going to be creating two 'news mods' for the site.

The job:

- Post 5-8 quality news items per day
- Delete bad news, edit news where needed

The perks:
- It's pretty much volunteer, but:
- Your name in bold as a 'news mod' on the reviews site
- Power to delete/edit news
- A place on the soon to be 'staff' page at sputnik

Basically, it will work like this: If you want to be considered, put your name in for consideration, and me and the mods will choose two responsible and active members of the community.

5-8 items of news? Woah, I'll think about it.

Hep Kat better nominate himself.

I'll nominate myself; I really have nothing better to do than look for music news every day.

Yeah. There's lots of news floating around. It's surprising people can't take five minutes to paraphrase a couple of paragraphs or something...

Actually, SOP, if you weren't already a mod, I'd say you'd be great for this. You've submitted more news than anyone I've seen.

Incidentally, this is a really good idea as most people do seem a bit reluctant to post news despite the obvious popularity of the articles themselves.

I think, in addition to this, it might be an idea to create a short news-writer's archive of sorts, where we can put links to the major music news sites so people can access it fairly easily.

morrissey
06-12-2006, 08:15 PM
This is an absolutely fabulous idea. It's kind of too bad that the two biggest news writers I notice are already mods (SOP and Damrod). But this will be good to boost up the production of a pretty important but neglected part of the site.

edit: and I first read this thread title as "new mods" and I was a little surprised, I must say. :p

Since all the big wigs are here right now I'm wondering if it would be possible to add a "Concert Reviews" section to the site eventually? If sputnik keeps growing and "staff" writers are put in place, which may get us some freebies, might "press" status also be given. Which means not only might we get some free concert tix for reviewing purposes sent to us, but also we could make up press passes so we could go to gigs, events, etc, and then review the events the next day. Hot off the press. We could do interviews with artist. Could happen, you never know. Rolling Stone Magazine did it, why not sputnik? Plus free gigs and parties are cool....

MX says "think big".....

But I don't think so. In LA lot's of little fly by night papers do this. A friend of mines ex husband owns a tiny Cuban Newspaper. He gets press status and goes to free concerts, get's backstage, parties, events, ballgames, the whole shot. Press seats. And independent papers swing it, too. And I ain't talkin' the L.A. Times. It's possible...

Yeah, if more people posted news, then that section would probably become more prominent on the front page. Music news is important to a music website. I'm surprised more people aren't interested in it (like I have room to talk).

Can I just suggest that the two people chosen be open-minded musically, or at least from different ends of the genre-spectrum.

Not like my opinion matters, but I feel that the news mods (whoever they may be) should have duties with the news only, and that only mx, Med, Damrod, and Moz are to have access to the Sputnikmusic mod forum, since they are site-wide.

Good luck to the winners - you have quite a task ahead of you Googling for news and adding it everyday. Hopefully the end result is a bolstered news section, which would be quite nice.

What if MX ever has an idea about the news part of the site and wants the input of the news mods? Anyway, I'm actually having fun putting up news so even if I don't get the gig I'll still be doing news so that way it'll have at least a few people who contribute a lot.

So the new mods will be mods/not mods/fake mods? Trusted less then "real mods"? Contributing 5 to 8 articles a day plus edits and deleting but not be worthy enough to do business in the mod forum with the real mods? Everytime they have an issue or want something done they have to post it "in public" or get on aim? Send out a Bat Signal, perhaps?

hehehe.

Jom
06-16-2006, 11:34 PM
So the new mods will be mods/not mods/fake mods? Trusted less then "real mods"?

What? They're not going to be doing jack squat compared to what the site-wide staff does. Add articles from Blabbermouth/mySpace/wherever and edit/delete crappy news. Not exactly very time-consuming work.

Contributing 5 to 8 articles a day plus edits and deleting but not be worthy enough to do business in the mod forum with the real mods?

That's correct. The news mods have no effect on the other aspects of the site that the 'real mods' handle.

Everytime they have an issue or want something done they have to post it "in public" or get on aim? Send out a Bat Signal, perhaps?

I don't see much of a difference - mx asks the community first about site-related issues, answers bug problems here, and so on and so forth. It is true that he checks the Sputnikmusic staff forum more frequently than the MX staff forum (note to self: lol), but the news section is rather insignificant at this point, and should not be intertwined with the business that the Big Four take care of.

hehehe.

And to you as well.

JohnXDoe

Not doing jack squat? 5 news articles a day, which is the requested minimum, averages to 1800 news articles a year plus edits and deletes. That's a little more then jack squat. No they won't be "all powerful" but they will be mods. Otherwise let's call them something else. Like the sputnik Reporters. Or somethin'.....

I also should say this is not my position because I entered this thing late. I don't really expect to get chosen, as my contributions here have been minimum. But to slag willing and eager participants like that by saying they will contribute "crappy news" not worthy of anything, basically, is counter productive to what is trying to be achieved here, I believe.
