so yeah...just as some background...i've been playing guitar for about 3 years...and i like it but i still dont' think that it is my thing...so i'm going to try out drums for a change...i play in my high school's drum line...i'm currently 2nd bass. so i know how to read sheet music as well as tabs...i'm not a newbie into percussion.
i want to get a nice decent set...i can spend about $400 on it... i want my set to have at least 4 pieces (bass, medium or small tom, floor tom, and snare) and ate least a crash and a ride...high hats as well, of course...i was looking through the musicians friend site and i looked at pulse drumsets but i dunno if those are good....i also looked at ludwig, and i might consider that one.

The Pulse sets aren't that great. Since you're on such a strict budget, see if you can find a good second hand one like a Tama Swingstar, or a beginner Sonor or Mapex, or Yamaha Rydeen.
As for cymbals, I would get either Sabian or Paiste starter cymbals over Zildjian, or if you're feeling adventurous try some Wuhans. It's a crapshoot with the Wuhans though, they seem to be pretty inconsistent.

For $400 I would look at some medium grade used kits or look at Yamaha Rydeens. Just because beginner kits are horrible now.
For some cymbals, try wuhan or Paiste's

Second hand premier cabria or something as pitchfork said, or a second hand tama swingstar.

You could possibly find a second hand sonor force 3001 for about 400.. maybe even a 2003 or 3003. All great sets for the money. Ecspecially if you get your hands on one for 400.

Mapex isnt necessarily better considering they are made by the same company.. A lot of thier sets cost more than sonor on musicians friend, but they are throwing in a extra tom or two.. and in some cases a "free" snare.

I agree to an extent. No way you can get a decent kit *AND* cymbals for 400...but who knows, maybe youll get lucky. Keep checking ebay frequently.
