i havnt seen a Nirvana thread and i searched it to, so this is were we can discuss Nirvana, and even Foo Fighters cause of Dave Grohl, so please discuss... :)
to me Dave Grohl is very insperational because of his bass work, he could control it so well with speed and volume! what are your thoughts on Nirvana & FF?
i like those two bands but expect some flame fest later on.....

I like Nirvana, but Alice In Chains > Nirvana.
And I think Dave Grohl is best as a drummer, not a guitarist.

I used to love Nirvana, but I kind of grew out of them. I can still listen to them now and again but my music taste has changed a lot.

How do you guys call a band which introduces you to new music and helps you discover new genres? Nirvana is a band like this. A die hard nirvana fan can evolve to anything from metaller to punk.

I respect Dave as a musician. But that's about as far as it goes. I never did understand the hype over Nirvana. I never liked them. Foo Fighters are better, but still not quite my cup-o-tea. Probot (Daves metalish project) had it's moments that were mildly ammusing.

Still you cant deny how influencial nirvana have been and how a 15 year old album (Nevermind) sounds as if it was recorded today. The hype doesnt have to do as much with the music itself as with what nirvana and Kurt Cobain represents: the transition from the 80s to the 90s as far music, fashion and way of thinking is concerned. Nirvana definitely had good timing. Furthermore, it's the tragical way they ended BEFORE even showing signs of decline. I still find the whole story fascinating and touching.

I listen to Nirvana at times. Nevermind is currently in my car. I love how the drums sound on that record. They come right at me. Overall, Nirvana is pretty good, though I can only listen to them in moderation.

I don't ever recall Dave Grohl playing bass, unless he recorded the bass parts to Foo Fighter's stuff, in which case, okay?

I don't think they stole the scene. I mean they still play AIC and Soundgarden on the radio all the time.

I think I have to somewhat agree with wrathchild88. Personally, I think Nirvana's best assets was their amazingly lucky timing, their similarity to bands like Soundgarden and Chains, and the fact that they were just so much easier to listen to then both. I mean musically, there just wasn't really much to them; all they really had was catchy but simple riffs. Dave Grohl is pretty good, though.
Whats in a name?
06-09-2006, 05:26 PM
II really don’t see how people can say Nirvana stole the grunge scene. Alice in chains, Sound Garden and the Screaming Trees had all released albums on major record labels before Nirvana released Nevermind so they had plenty of chances to become the break through band for grunge. All that happened was Nirvana’s Nevermind just struck a chord with the public and was boosted by the constant rotation of smells like teen spirit on MTV. It was only really after Nevermind that other grunge acts became widely known.

In my opinion, Nirvana just got big off of other people's ideas mostly, and when they found a song "formula" that people loved or got them big, they used it a ton.
But then again, Nirvana was pretty original most the time.
Either way, he made incredible music when they first started out, but I didn't like the "newer" stuff as much as the old. I liked the more "punk" stuff he did.
Great band, but WAY over-rated, and people give Kurt way too much credit if you ask me.
PhatJesus
06-09-2006, 05:45 PM
Sure. They didn't steal the grunge scene, they created the grunge scene. I just think that Chains and Soundgarden were part of the natural progression of rock music, just like early punk bands were part of the backlash created by bands like Led Zeppelin, and Nirvana simply rode their coattails to rock stardom by creating an easier-to-listen-to sound that was perfect for angry teenagers and housewives alike. Basically, I think they won their stardom by exploiting a watered down style that would come to outshine bands like Soundgarden (no pun intended) and create a genre that those bands really shouldn't have been a part of.
^i don't think nirvana exploited/rode the coat tails of anything, nevermind was a straight rock record and just because of kurt's love of john lennon it had a lot of poppy hooks. Just take about a girl from bleach is very similar in style to nevermind (it's very pop rock) it was just included among alot of black flag rip offs (not to put down bleach or anything it's a great record), if there had been more songs like AaG it'd of been less of a transition to the pop sounding of Nevermind, and maybe they wouldn't be ripped on as much, although all the kids claiming to be fans doesn't really help.
/ends rant, sorry :(

I just like Nirvana because I can relate alot to the lyrics.
In the way of technique, Kurt Cobain is a crap guitarist and singer, but he plays and sings with a lot of feeling, which is somthing a lot of musicians can't do these days.

Kurt as a songwriter = godly

I'm not a big fan of the whole "grunge" label. Haha I'm not one of those "labels suck" people, but the big 4 at the time all had a different sound. None of them really sounded alike.
Nirvana were probably the most straight-up out of all of them. Pearl Jam can be boring and Soundgarden's songs aren't really radio-friendly aside from a few. I always considered Alice In Chains to be more metal.
Meh I'm just rambling..rock on everyone. I was listening to Floyd The Barber before, I love the lyrics. Bleach is pretty underrated.
