View Full Version : R&M JUNE Songwriting Competition

MetalOz
06-04-2006, 07:59 AM
This month's theme is:

Swords & Sorcery

It can be any genre or sub-genre of rock or metal, you decide...

GENERAL RULES FOR SUBMITTING YOUR SONG:
1. You can only enter ONE song.

2a. You are allowed ONE edit. As soon as you submit your song, you are given this edit. If for any reason you feel the need to fix or change anything in your song, then you may use your ONE edit.

2b. If you elect to use your one edit, you WILL NOT receive any more edits, and you MAY NOT tamper with or edit your song in any way, shape, or form.

2c. A SAMPLE OF YOUR SUBMISSION DOES NOT COUNT AS AN EDIT. IF YOU UPLOAD A SAMPLE FOR US, WE WILL GIVE YOU AN OPINION AS TO WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

None of this bullshit where you submit multiple attempts but write "THIS IS NOT MY FINAL ENTRY." This encourages you to use your ONE edit when you actually need it. Submitting multiple samples that aren't samples (i.e. sending your song piece-by-piece) will result in an immediate disqualification, because it's just not fair to the other entrants.

3. Your song must fit the theme of this month.

4. Host your submission on http://www.soundclick.com/ or upload it into this thread via YSI and I will add it to the competition's Soundclick. If you haven't already, you will need to make an account [on Soundclick, if you elect this option].

5. I MUST have your song in MP3 format. Don't send me .wma, or .m4a, or any of those other BS extensions. As easy as they are to convert, don't make me do it for you, please. Thanks!

6a. MIDI SUBMISSIONS WILL BE IGNORED.

6b. Exception to Rule 6a: if you're using MIDI drums and/or keyboards, this is allowed; however, ALL GUITARWORK MUST BE AUTHENTIC.

7. If you are in need a recording program, do not ask us. Instead, download this free one: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

8. Here is a basic tutorial for using Fruity Loops and DKFH, Thank you comptonassrobert: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10716797&postcount=217

GENERAL RULES FOR THIS MONTH'S COMPETITION

1. You are absolutely (hell, it's encouraged :)) allowed to have other MXers and/or musicians in your area to help you with your song; however, you (the member on MX) need to have a hand in the production.

2. Time length is not a staple for this month. It's all up to you. But keep in mind that a 30 second song is probably not going to win and a ten minute epic is going to be harder to vote on. Most rock and metal songs are three to five minutes in length.

3. Quality is not a must; however, naturally, superior quality may give some members an edge in the final voting, but do not be discouraged from entering if you feel you have mediocre or worse equipment. Voters who trash your recordings because of quality will be disqualified from voting.

4. Vocals are NOT A REQUIREMENT; however, if you're paranoid about singing or can't find a singer, then do an instrumental track. Of course, with the theme this month, this might not be the best idea.

5. Jom is my associate for these competitions. He will help me in judging if songs meet the required genre (but with the theme this month, it should be pretty easy to determine).

6. If you are having trouble recording or anything like that, please feel free to ask in this thread, plenty of members (especially Berner and moaner in The Jam Session forum) will be willing to help you to make your song. Just tell them why you need help, and these guys will be more than happy to assist you. Rounder is also extremely knowledgable and posts here often.

7. Any questions, feel free to post here or e-mail me.

///

GENERAL RULES FOR THIS THREAD

1. The winner decides the theme for the next competition thread, except that I will make the thread.

2. Voting takes place in a separate thread, which is usually 2-3 days after the competition is over. PLEASE BE PATIENT. THANK YOU.

3. Winner selects the genre or theme. He/She is to NOT reveal it in the thread if he/she wins.

4. Don't spam this thread. Ask questions, give feedback, and so on, but don't spam this thread. I'll just ban you for forever or something.

Besides the accepted definition of spam in R&M, the following case will also be treated as spam:

Don't **** in the thread about how you wished the theme was something else or that someone else should have won. Either you enter the competition and win it and change the theme and vote in the voting threads or shut the hell up.

///

DEADLINE

THE DEADLINE FOR THIS COMPETITION WILL BE JULY 10TH, 11:59:59PM EDT (-5 GMT).

*This is open for flexibility - if it needs to get pushed back or forward, just let me know. Don't expect long periods, though.

///

PARTING THOUGHTS:

1. READ THE RULES AND GUIDELINES ONE MORE TIME.

2. Good luck to all the participants.

3. HAVE FUN.

4. If you have questions, DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK IN THIS THREAD. We will not bite your head off unless you blatantly break the rules.

5. Make sure your song pertains to this month's selected theme.

Recording software= free downloadable Audacity and Fruity Loops.

I have the perfect thing for this. Mine will be most original since it's based on keys.:)

Everything I write is layered with keys. In fact, I always write keys first, guitars/drums second.

I'll get to writing tomorrow.

NO!! You must do this competition right now. I'm sure there's somewhere or someone you know that could record you though or atleast could lend you a mic.

All that crap is close to free. The only thing is if you have time on your hands, and it doesn't really matter because there's plenty of time given in the competition.

Oh well, if you don't do it... Less competition for me.:)

This screams Black Metal at me, and I would love to do this----- but I have a really difficult time writing lyrics that aren't "real" to me, as in things from my life, beliefs, or experiences. The subject I think is very narrow and very fictional, and beyond what I feel I can do as a songwriter. Unless "sorcery" can be changed to "Paganism", I may sit this one out.

adamstartin
06-06-2006, 12:57 PM
It doesnt have to be black metal. It also says power metal. Do something symphony x style or dragonforce style. I think im going to do a joke song inspired by megadeth.

Lord of Sword
06-06-2006, 01:00 PM
It doesn't need lyrics either. I've got no way of doing vocals so mine will be instrumental as usual. I'm going to try and do some Final Fantasy style song anyway, then metal-ise it Black Mages style.

Nepenthe
06-06-2006, 02:10 PM
You know, you can make a very serious song about this topic. They don't all have to be cheesy and over the top, look at bands like Ancient Rites' lyrics. People with swords have feelings too yknow.

I plan on spending the rest of this week writing, and then about 2 weeks recording. Being a mediocre keyboard player who writes extremely complex keyboard parts is never easy.

JamJar
06-06-2006, 02:37 PM
I've just started writing in guitar pro. It looks like I'm going to have to use midi keyboards as I'm really not great at keyboard and I've already made it too hard for myself. Overall is going to be power metal, but I'm going to try to make the lyrics serious and the vocals might be growled. (I haven't decided yet)

MetalOz
06-06-2006, 02:37 PM
Swords and Sorcery is very broad, it can be about a character from History or Mythology, some of the most popular books and movies can fit into this theme, fictional or non-fictional (or based on non-fiction anyway). You could write about King Arthur, Hercules, Attila the Hun, or the Crusades... I could go on and on but it shouldn't be that hard to come up with something that interests you...

crag
06-06-2006, 03:02 PM
hm, well i've just about got my song sorted instrument wise. Vocals, on the other hand, aren't looking promising, it's proving hard to write lyrics:(

Steerpike
06-06-2006, 03:59 PM
I've tried writing and tabbing out a couple songs, but my limited knowledge on theory is really killing me. I can't make them sound the way I want them to.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem. I just finished writing a track and I'm quite pleased with it. Unfortunately it needs vocals and I have no idea where to start.

OOOOOO

This is perfect because I need to finalize my ultimate version of my Fellowship of the Ring Overture in fifteen days anyway, since I have to go off to work at camp.

The sound is not as power metalish so much as it is like prog-metal with Nightwish-style orchestration and melody. No vocals, unfortunately, but it's meant to be taken as a orchestral composition following a rock format.

I'll enter if I can master/get the hang of Fruity loops in about a week. I've got the guitars and vocals figured out. I don't have access to a studio for a couple months since I'm not at home but nonetheless, bad production aside, I think I'll enter a black-metal/trip-hop song.

Nice. This is perfect for my stupid 80's hair metal tune I just recorded. I actually already had some swordish lyrics for it too. I'm gonna save my power metal recording for a more narrowed power metal competition.

Drunken Viking

Interesting. I'll try it out, I already have perfect lyrics and the song almost completely recorded. It will take another couple weeks of mastering though to make to complete to my meet my standards though. Think NWOAHM meets Gothenburg Metal with added pinch of Metalcore...

Invicta_Veritas
06-11-2006, 02:26 PM

My song is finished but I am trying to get someone to do vocals for me. If I can't, then I'll submit it with me doing the singing but that's usually where I lose points :(

Here's my lyrics:

Battle Hymn
The alarm has sounded. Duty calls us
We must go where eagles dare
Defend our land against invaders
We will stand and fight until they die
We will slaughter any that will try
To take away our promised land

Out of the night and into battle
Into glory we will ride
Out of the night and into battle
Into glory we will ride

Desperation at the border
The enemy has breached our walls
Grab your weapon. Time to dig in
We will stand and fight until we die
We will slaughter any that will try
To take away our promised land

Out of the night and into battle
Into glory we will ride
Out of the night and into battle
Into glory we will ride

Ooh the battle wages on through the night
Ooh the battle wages on to the coming dawn
Till the final fight has been won
The enemies are crawling. Their heroes have fallen
Its time to send them straight back to hell

The battle’s ended. We’re victorious
We have driven back our foe
Mourn our losses. Praise the heroes
Till its time to sing our battle cry
We will stand and fight until we die
To defend our Promised Land

Out of the night and into battle
Into glory we will ride
Out of the night and into battle
Into glory we will ride

Seeing as how illness has been plaguing my voice, rendering me unable to scream for a while, I improvised. I pulled an Amon Amarth and used spoken words of poetry over the music.

I may or may not have time to edit it, so this may/may not be my final submission. Feel free to critique as if it were. I will post the lyrics at some point.

It is a song of King Arthur and his personal struggles.

Nepenthe
06-14-2006, 12:06 PM
Yeah, there's really no 'Swords and Sorcery' feeling from that song at all. It's really just melodic death riffs with some speaking over it. It needs to have a certain 'epic' aspect about it, it can't just be a normal song like this. I have to make it seem like I'm coming down harshly, but that's just my honest opinion.

Invicta_Veritas
06-14-2006, 12:24 PM
Well, you have to keep in mind that again, it's not really my area of expertise, therefore I have to create the subject with the lyrics, which I will post tonight. As far as the music goes, I have to stick with what I know, which is Melodic Death.

I'll be redoing the solo tonight, since I had my wierd fun last night with it, and I will probably remix it and redo the vocals. We'll see how well my voice has healed and I may change some of the parts to harsh vocals............

Nepenthe
06-14-2006, 12:26 PM
Harsh vocals may make it a bit better. Do you have access to any kind of keyboards? Even if you don't know how to play them, just using them to add some atmosphere could greatly improve the song and perhaps make it a bit more 'Swords and Sorcery'-like.

haha, i love writing solo's. It's the only way i can keep my music 'interesting' without using vocals (which i plan to use sparingly because mine suck:p )

Hello everyone,
Here's my finished entry for the competition:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=558212

Everything on this track is played/sung by myself. Well, except the drums which I just programmed. :)

Lyrics are based on the awesomest of all awesome battles that have ever taken place, the battle of Thermopylae.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae

So, no sorcery at all, but quite a few swords lol.

Lyrics:

"300"

Into the mist of a time long ago
Three hundrend men had the duty and courrage to go
Fight with persians a million strong
Their king wants our country, our proud life and even our soul.

We won't surrender so easy, we won't conform to your plan,
You want our lives and our kingdom, to make it a part of your clan...
We say come and take if you can!

March day and night to wait at the spot,
Where we'll take your lives and then leave free your bodies to rot.
Stand before you at break of the dawn,
And wait there we will till your bodies by our steel be sawn.

Marching in silence as brothers, our eyes in the blue sky above.
We know that our death is for certain,
But in our hearts no remorse...
Straight to the hot gates we go!

Silence our song as we stand proud and tall,
The battle begins and our hearts crave to kill 'em all.
They’re like waves falling onto a rock,
We will stand this ground by steel and by fire and stone.

Fight for your kin not for glory, Fight for your land and your homes
In Hades we'll meet to remember
this day when we died as gods...
With utter contempt for the odds!

I really hope you guys enjoy it. Drop me some feedback if you feel that something could be changed for the better in one edit lol. :)

Soundclick seems to be doing a wonderful job ruining an otherwise semidecent production by only allowing 44100Hz 16bit 128kbps MP3s, so if anyone would like to have a listen at a better quality, here it is at 48Khz 24bit 192VBR:

Why? You seem the type that could really dig it. If you say Blind Guardian isn't awesome in any way, I just may have to slice your head off with my sword.

The vocals annoy me, for the most part. The only power metal I enjoy is female -fronted PM bands and newer Primal Fear.

And yes, I can play piano/keyboard, but no longer have access to one, as I quite recently sold mine. So that is out of the question.

I will be redoing most of the instrumental stuff, mainly the solo (that was kindof a dickoff, huh?) , I don't know what I want to do about the vocals yet.

I assume becasue you are on dial-up you don't want to try downlaoding DKFH? Fruity Loops has basic drum sounds included...

Are there real drum samples in FL 3? If there is, where exactly are they? I can't find them..If not, I'm still looking for a few real drum samples.

Isn't that like Drumkit From Hell.

Dial up is not compatible with X-hundred megabyte downloads.

Thank you, Shattered Future. I'm not sure how it'll sound just yet with the difference in production but it'll do. :) Much appreciated.

The lyrics, indecipherable though they are are:

Seven come to tell this tale
lived too far this earth, this veil
and in this evil this is the sign-
calling the earthbound man.
The darkest notion, this is the veil
calling the earthbound man.

Hail the arcane son
wicked witch, the earthbound one
Hail the simple touch
wicked witch, the darkened throne

Seven lived to tell this tale
of swords and demons within this veil
The deepest evil is still the sign
calling the earthbound man.

Hail the arcane son
wicked witch, the earthbound one
Hail the simple touch
wicked witch, the darkened throne

Now comes the time
who is the arcane son?
Now is the time
who is the earthbound one?

Arcturius

Righteous morals not yet spent
For thou shall never lend soul in debt
Your inner conflict a righteous rage
Your outer struggle shall last the days

Internal turmoil will surface soon
Brought to a head by the light of this moon
Your sword itself forged with the fire of this Earth
With the Spirit of Mother feuling the hearth

Duty, self-righteous; feelings are just
Thou shall not spill blood for emotions of lust
Brought forth to your senses, you now choose a side
But the sword never questions; blood never lies

Now you are left with what you have wrought
See now the plague Rome's riches have bought
In personal conflict, the answers were sought
In the end you have gained them, at an unbearable cost

But let it be known to the world from this day
Arcturius and Righteous be one and the same
There can be a balance, this duty and blood
There is no greater unity, for we are all one.

That good, bad, or reserving judgement? If i was to critisize this song, it'd probably be the vocals. With proper vocals this would be an excellent song, but the vocals kinda ruin it. Ask around MX, and add a more melodic vocal line. This would seriously improve it dramatically. The quality is pretty good, you obviously mic-ed it. Thats the only criticism i would make.

Have you listened to the newer version i posted? I still kinda just went off, but it's slightly better.

And I really don't understand as far as the riffing sounding a lot like our other songs.... I mean, I do, but that's really kind of the style that defines us as a band. Me being one of the guitarists and the vocalist in the band, it's going to be of the same style, you know?

I'm wondering if these lyrics would fit.

Into the world
The child was born
The tiny Acacius
Son of Agathor

Chaos did reign
In the land they called home
As troll blood fell
From the midnight sky

Pre-Chorus:
Amongst the hallowed trees
Mighty battles were waged
Our heroes were slaughtered
And our new king was raised

Chorus:
In the mystic forest
A warrior emerged
To vanquish the dark ones
And their lord Naberius

I called out his forsaken name
“Damn you Naberius” I cried
And unto my piercing summon
The towering dark lord materialized

Alas, then I was merely a boy
And the dark lord laughed at me
“Maybe when you have grown
You may have your shot at me”

Pre-Chorus:
Amongst the hallowed trees
Mighty battles were waged
Our heroes were slaughtered
And our new king was raised

Chorus:
In the mystic forest
A warrior emerged
To vanquish the dark ones
And their lord Naberius

This young lad
Our new prince
Will soon be king
And our last hope

I'll submit mine as soon as the bass player gets his act together and records it. If he doesn't as deadline time approaches, then I'll take matters into my own hands.

Mine will be submitted once i write and record vocals and, time permitting, redo the solo's. The deadline is still 10th July, correct?

EDIT: I've got my vocals written now, they're by no means good but it was my first time ever writing lyrics so i'm relatively pleased.

FIGHT FOR FREEDOM
Verse 1
Dripping with fear as they wait for the fight.
Clutching their swords, the enemy in sight.
Fighting for freedom, a place to call home,
A land that is theirs, somewhere to roam.
But over the hill, the enemy draws near.
They'll fight to the death, without any fear.
Taking their positions, the battle begins.
The two armies meet, but nobody wins.

Verse 2
And as they plunge on into death,
They take what may be their last breath.
The time has come for them to go.
And as they say their final prayers,
The line between good and evil tears.
What horrors await them, they don't know.

Verse 3
Charging down the battle field, they raise their swords up high.
Friends and foes are taken down, they know the end is nigh.
A slash and a thrust, a cut to the chest.
Another soldier falls, along with the rest.

Pre Chorus
The battle rages on, the time is close at hand.
Bodies of the soldiers are strewn across the land.

Chorus
Together we will fight for what we believe.
Victory will be ours, soon you will see.
Together we will fight for what we believe.
Victory will be ours, soon you will see.

Verse 4
Their numbers have weakened, they're dropping like flies.
It's almost time for a new power to rise.
Holding their ground they fight the last few.
The battle ends, the enemy torn in two.

Pre Chorus
The battle's over now, the time is now at hand.
Bodies of the soldiers are strewn across the land.

Chorus
Together we will fight for what we believe.
Victory will be ours, soon you will see.
Together we will fight for what we believe.
Victory will be ours, soon you will see.

So basically, this is my first post here, but I've been working on the song specifically for this with Eleventeen, and in a drunken rage we finished the vocals tonight, so this is our project in its entirety.

The insanely epic lyrics:

In the valley where dragons roam, was born a strapping young man,
With shimmering golden hair, and yes, an epic beard
His name was joey calzone, he had a thunderous voice

Joey calzone, keeper of the valley where dragons roam
Wielder of the grimmest sword, with a red diamond pommel stone

Joey confronted the dark sorcerer
Slayed him with his epic sword

Set the dragons free from the barren dragonkeep
Upon the back of a winter's night

Joey is so strong, he showed the sorcerer his might

The wrath of the bakers son, brought the dragons home

Ok, I changed my mind on what song I want to submit.

Are these lyrics acceptable? (It's about killing trolls)

The Holocaust
And Genocide
Ravaging War
Bloodshot Eyes

Maniac trolls running
Through forests of green
While the ancient trees
Whisper to the breeze

With gleaming suicidal pretext
Slice deep into your soft neck
Attempt to summon the dark one
And send blood to block out the sun

Chorus:
Asgard; Hall of the Gods (Asgard)
800 Men; Through the many doors
Gleaming, Glistening and Shining Steel
In the Land of Valhalla (Valhalla)

To Odin and Thor
Sacrifice be made
Of worthless peasants
That without their life
A better world be made

Chorus:
Asgard; Hall of the Gods (Asgard)
800 Men; Through the many doors
Gleaming, Glistening and Shining Steel
In the Land of Valhalla (Valhalla)

A Myriad Obsolete - Captain Albert And His Army of Metal Stallions (http://media.putfile.com/Captain-Albert--His-Army-of-Metal-Stallions)

I didn't make the song specifically for this competition, but it fits. (I think?)

It's (Power-ish metal) and it's like an intergalactic space version of Lord of the Rings, does that count?

Basically the Alberts were exiled from their planet so they came to Earth. They created a Metal Army of Madness and traded in their battle axes for guitars. Planet Devestacion (their home planet) found out and went to destroy them all because they thought the Alberts were gaining strength and were going to defeat them all. Yet there was one they could not destroy, Captain Albert himself. Captain Albert slayed all the assassins from Planet Devestacion and still wanders the earth, recruiting all he can find. They all use swords by the way. Think of it like Bal Sagoth.

Am I in?

And also, I got confused with the directions. Is it mandatory to create a soundclick account?

If all else fails, and you're in a nice mood, you can stream the song and record via the 'what u hear' input in Audacity. It's either that or the .WAV input.

Only if you're in a nice mood though. >:-[
