Aha! Found one :D Now I know why I could never find one on Ebay.. Because everyone is silly and doesn't use the proper names! I was searching for "geddy scratchplate" with nothing, then i searched "geddy pickguard" and found one!

Pickguard: The kind found on Les Pauls. Not flat against the body

Scratchplate: The kind found on strats, etc.

Thanks anyway :)

I wasn't aware of any difference. Since when is it like this?

^ Yeah I don't think there is a difference.

Just like plectrums and picks...same thing, different name.

There is a difference. Pickguards like on a les paul are to actually protect from pick damage and scratch plate i think its just something to put to make it look purdy.

but that can't be right. think about it: a pickguard(LP) does what it says and guards the body from the pick. and a scratchplate does the same thing; it's there to be scratched instead of the body.

Yeah, but like a pickguard, it's protecting something you can't see. So what's the point?

I don't see any difference. It's just two different terms for one thing. :thumb:

Pickgaurd - a small plastic wing that protects a small area of the guitar from being scratched by the pick, the most vulnerable area

Scratchplate - a plate covering a large portion of the instrument to protect it from general scratching

I find that my Precision pickguard also covers the openings for wires and pickups and such

Other than guarding the body from the pick
Being a plate to get scratched instead of the body

2 posts above me have it :)

It seems most US people just call them all pickguards, and most UK people call them scratchplates

I call it a scratchplate because it sounds cooler.

Plus i think Chris told me the difference ages ago.

Correction: THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. A Les Paul style guards the guitar from the pick. So does your definition of a 'scratchplate.' I've seen many, many guitars with obvious wear from pick strokes on a pickguard. It depends on your style of pick-playing.
