The Marcus Miller Jazz bass or the Musicman Bongo/Sterling.

No wait, the original Fender Urge trumps them all!

And don't you mean Clarence Fender?

mustang-monk

yeah i do mean clarence but can imagine some not knowing he had a bit of a girly name n wondering clarence who? if mr fender likes to be leo im gonna stick with leo

+ those r out of my budget a little

The 75 reissue (the one you pictured) makes a great bass for slap.

Although the G&L 2000 (or whatever its called) is pretty sweet too

Well, you said best.

If you can't afford the Marcus Miller than an MIM jazz is about the best you'll be able to do. MAYBE a used G&L.

marcus miller 5string bass bass.

The five string is so much more expensive than the four string and I've never been able to figure out why.

mustang-monk

it might be on a smaller production run meaning fewer are made increasing price due to supply n demand

it's US made, whereas the 4 string is japanese made.

I also vaguely remember something about a Sadowsky preamp.

The 5 string is a redesign, its different to normal fender 5s. Unlike the miller 4 sig, which is basically a cheap 75 reissue with a preamp and different pickguard

4 banger is CIJ, 5er is MIA, plus it has the graphite reinforced neck and some other stuff.

Mr Winters wrote an article as to why, once.

i owned the urge II bass.......the thing definitley needs a nice set up to play to its potential....however, when playing, you hear the electronics more than the actual bass....it sound very meh

maybe the production models sounds crappy, I don't think I've ever heard the production model used at length, sicne Stu only uses ones custom built by Todd Krause.

You say you have a Mustang bass already? I loved the mustang bass. The one I played was strung up with some GHS lights and I played through a Hartke head into a GK cab. Seriously nice punch.

He helped design it. He didn't do it alone though.

Mustang basses are short-scale, no?

They're real punchy, nice for a pop in the face sort of slap tone, but maybe no the best for a shake stuff lowend slap tone.

honestly, i find that any bass with J pups, and good slap strings will do. I recommend a fender J, but if you had enough money, id get the american fender P delux (it has a humbucker at the bridge and a p pickup in the middle, and a full three band EQ. Im pretty sure its active, and it has an ORGASMIC slap tone), and for strings, nice, thin guage strings, like the Smith Slap Masters strings

i never started slapping until i got my Fender Precison Lyte
something about the playability and the sound made slapping so much more fun and easy to do
its active and has a P/J config
and it's lightweight, w/o losing the low end :thumb:
i'd check that out

Just got a fender jazz MIM last night, and to say the least, Im a bit disappointed.

Now i know that the mexican made fenders are like the budget line but still, this "growly" fender jazz tone isnt apparent at all in the MIM. As far as i can tell it sounds not much different to my squier P bass, rather disappointing.

Ontop of that, this "versatile" tone that people keep saying the jazz has, isnt apparent at all. Both the volume knobs change the tone only the slightest, and the tone control is just to set how "unclear" you want it to sound.

Sounds like you got stung there, as is the case with MIM's, some are great, some are t3h suck!

I really didnt like the finish on the neck of the Marcus Miller bass i played, i actually prefer playing my peavey thats less then half the price (I was even playin the MM thru a big Ashdown stack rather than my laney).
I found the neck had a stick gloss finish and that the same was to be said for the Jaguar bass.
I wasn't impressed, no dee no dee no dee no, i wasn't impressed at all.

Did you order it online or something? Did you get to play it before you bought it?

Buy a set of Model J's for it.

I was thinking that, but the bass needs new strings, probably a new bridge, new scratchplate, and new pickups, hell maybe even a new paintjob :(

And yea, it was an ebay purchase, however i did go to pick it up personally. I had been dieing to get a fender jazz after hearing about them, and i felt kindof obliged to buy it :(...

I've always said that MIM Jazz basses are mediocre. Their P's are all right, though.

i havent had any problems with my MIM jazz, with the exception of the bridge, which i still need to replace. Other than that, its fine.

I could have one, and probably not have any "problems", but I'd still think their tone isn't worth it.

I just find it too "thin". I love MIA jazzes and all, but the MIM's just get me wanting more (tonewise).

This is with stock pickups, of course.

I am pleased with my MIM jazz bass. It never really gave me any problems except that my sweaty fingers destroyed the pole pieces on the pickups. The poles were seriously brown with no way to fix it. I got some duncans and it sounded great. Since i defretted it, it sounds great as a fretless. I played about 100 of them before i brought the right one though.
