View Full Version : Stuff goes missing at gigs/performances...

Well last wednesday night i played in the school band as we were performing in a massed band for a this special concert/event. Anyway, the place was crowded with like 6-7 other school bands in the green room (the backstage preparation room), I would guess and say there was a couple of hundred students/performers there.

It was late at night (11pm) and after we had performed our pieces and got off stage, I packed my stuff back into my guitar carry bag and im 99% sure i put my guitar strap back into my gig bag ontop of my instrument cables.

Anyway, when everyone was asked to go back out on stage for the "finale" we werent to take our instruments (barely enough room for the students to fit on stage) so i tucked my guitar case in the corner of the room, in a gap between a cupboard and the wall.

After we get off stage to go home, the teachers and everyone else wanted to packup and leave a.s.a.p. because it takes us about an hour travelling to get back to the school, so everyone just grabs their stuff and we leave to get on the bus. I assumed all my gear was still in my case.

Anyway, when we get back its 12:44pm, and then another 10-15 minutes for me to get from the school back to home, so at this time its 1pm on a weeknight so i figured I'd just drop my stuff in the corner of my room and go straight to bed.

The next day at about lunchtime i wakeup and unpack my stuff, but my guitar strap is missing. Alright, so its only a guitar strap, nothing big, but (unlike alot other people on these forums) I dont have much money, let alone alot of money to be spending on my bass & gear. I liked my strap, it was a nice thick genuine leather fender strap, and i bought it because it was decent and i figured that it would last a long time as I would keep it for it for the next guitars that i moved on to. Now im strap-less :(

I rang the hall, they said nothing was handed in for lost property (as it figures, why would anyone hand in a $35 guitar strap if they could just pocket it).

Anyway I'm still mourning the loss of my favourite strap :( and I began to wonder, has anyone else here had similar experiences with equipment going missing? and did you ever get it back?

Last time I played my jacket went missing from the green room, I was too pissed at the time to care, but in the morning I was annoyed.

Yea, well you got the bastards back.

And i definately can tell you this was no accident, cables may look the same, straps do not. Besides, im not even sure the strap would fit on a violin/cello/double bass, so they must have be completely shitfaced to think that the strap was theirs...

And $200US worth of cables  .... I'd have sold my bass, bought an uzi and gone postal in the theatre .

unfortunatly this happens, i once had 2 sm58's taken i was to say the least a bit pissed off. but you have to go by the rules of the road dude, "if it's not tied down, take it" it will make you feel better trust me. oh that rule doesn't apply to friends eqipment by the way.

I think most of the gigs I play something goes 'missing'.

One gig my guitarist had his guitar almost taken from him. Guy from another band went back stage, guitar cases all over the floor, just picked up the first one he saw and started walking out. I thought he just had the same case as my guitarist so i just let him walk right past me, but as soon as he got outside he ran into the rest of my band who thankfuly stopped him.

Always make sure you keep your stuff safe coz its so easy for people to just walk in a take what they like.

i was going to "borrow" an ampeg svt5 last year from one of the emengenza shows. they had a spare on in this little room with a whole load of beer. so we borrowed the beer but couldnt get the fire escape open.

it would have been our way of getting back at them for having to play 1st when there were about 12 people there. and by the time the 2nd band started there were around 600. we didnt stand much of a chance with the voting.

Shame, Emengenza suck so i might have to try this at the final in a weeks time.

I'll give it a shot as they deserve it so much.

For the final they're putting on 12 bands in one evening and priced tickets at £7, so because we're on second we start at 6:30, meaning that our fans pay £7 to see a 20 mintue set and then have to wait til 12 to see if we won.

haha. well. we sold all our tickets. but there were no trains to manchester the day we had it. so everyone turned up. had to get the bus. and missed our set.

the free set strings was a nice touch though!

I let some dude borrow my 50$ tuner, and when I asked him for it, he said he gave it to my friend. I talked to said friend, and he said he never got anything back. The little biatch stole my tuner!

No SM58 is the definitive vocal mic, why do you think professionals who could spend thousands on mics buy sm58s or sm57's?

Anyways I have had a couple of cheap cables go missing, a pint mysteriously being drunk (that annoyed me, badly, it was ice cold and I was ****ing boiling. They didn't even take the glass to the bar) and someone stealing a brand new pack of fine cigars out of my pocket they were good quality as well, castellas, £6.50 a pack.
Its a kick in the balls but we have to deal with it.

The drummer in my main band had his snare nicked once, numerous drum keys, his stick bag (full of sticks), drummers have it worse I suppose, more pieces to lose.

Never been a victim of theft in the gear and bass department thankfully.

Did have a tog bag full of school stuff stolen and also my wallet the one time.
The wallet particularly pissed me off as the bastards went into my bag and then closed it up afterwards.

Oh cripes, just remebered, some tits stole the badge off the front of my car the one time and the Dealership wanted something like US$50 for a replacement, I mean come on it was a cheap *** piece of plastic. I got a copy and superglues that sucker in.

I haven't had my tuner for about 2 years now. Someone swiped it at a show and I never got around to getting a new one.

I tune by ear, anyway.

Yeah, something similar happened to me too. My bandmates and me went backstage after having a drink and i see this guy trying to pass us with a Rickenbacker case. Since i was the only one who played a Ric that night, it was pretty obvious. We just grabbed him and gently dragged him to the police, who were conveniently across the street.

PS: first and only time in my life the cops were actually available when needed

i've been lucky enough to never loose anything major like a bass or amp but i think at least something has turned up missing after every show i've ever played. stage props, mic stands, cables, a cheap passive wirlwind DI box, etc.

Never had anything stolen. Mainly cause we don't leave our gear around. Whenever we are done a set, we load up the van and take everything back to my guitarists place. Then, we go back and have a couple drinks.:chug:

It's just indecent to steal something that expensive.

Maybe a strap, or a cable, but not a guitar, or $700 worth of drumming equipment!

I've been lucky enough to have not gotten anything stolen, except maybe a pick. which doesn't count because I rarely use picks.

That reminds me of a story my guitarist has.

He was getting his guitar repaired, and he went to pick it up, gave them the paperwork, and walked out. They almost made it to the car when the drummer said, "dude, I don't think that's your case."

Sure enough, it wasn't.

They walked back in, and gave it back to the guy, who responded, "Whoops! That's not yours. Thank you. Hey, just for laughs, you want to know what guitar I gave you? It was a Parker Fly Classic. **LOL**"

By the way, my guitarist, at the time, had a Strat.

Thankfully, I've never had anything stolen from me at shows before. I've left stuff behind, but then ran back in to grab it at the last second before I left.

My drummer accidentally left his throne behind at a show, and it went missing.

My guitarist has also lost jackets and whatnot at shows. His favourite jacket was taken. He was rather upset about that.

You go to bed at lunch time?

Anyway man, that sucks.

Back when I was at school, at the annual talent quest I lent my Korg tuner to a singer/guitarist to use before her song, and forgot to get it back. It never came back, and eventually I forgot about it. The year after, once again at the talent quest I was getting ready to go on stage and she comes up and asks me "Hey Chris, is this yours?" And lo and behold there was my tuner. True story :amaze:

That is why you should stop buying specialist beer, then you don't have to nick a snare to balance out the disappearance of your pint.
