I'm in a band and currently use a mate's speakers but I need to get my own amp.
I want to know the best place to buy one, people to ask, how much it'll cost, best makes...etc.
If you could help me with any of this it would be grate. Thanks.

Depends on the stages you play on and how many boards you use. I've used my own mixer for years (my rig is usually 3 to 6 boards). You can send outs directly from the mixer to front-of-house and separate outs to a PA syle amp (rack mount digital is simple - you can rack-mount your mixer and amp and whatever outboard FX you might use). Wire up a couple of good full-range speakers for your own monitoring and you're good to go. This way, you can both monitor yourself in stereo and send stereo signals to front-of-house as well for the big sound. Just pan the mixer channels all the way left and right for each stereo keyboard. If you're using an older mono board, it will only need one channel on the mixer. Also, you won't have to rely on mood of the stage monitoring crew to get it right for you.
