Someone on another board is selling one of these for £400, 4 string, active.

This thread has 2 purposes:

1. To find out what you all think of it for that price

and

2. Since i'm almost guaranteed to buy it (seems like a great deal), what colours do you think would be best for the pickguard, given that the body is white and the neck is painted black? I've seen pics, and i'm not too keen on the standard metal plate with the white.

Cheers

excellent for the price. I would choose it over most other mid market four strings(five string is different though i chose my schecter over it because i wanted a five string, and i prefer musicman basses as four strings for some odd reason.) To my ears it sounds just like a stingray with a 2 band EQ. stingrays with 3 band EQs are more popular nowadays, but back when ernieball started making musicman basses they had 2 band eqs(louis johnson's stingray had a 2 band eq). So basically, you're paying for a stripped down version of a classic stingray. It has the classic body shape, and the same electronics as the real deal.

If you're getting a white one, the classic black pickguard would look pretty nice, as well as a tortious shell of some sort.

I was 99% sure I was going to get a SUB before my second hand (mint condition) 'Ray popped up for an unbelievable price. I was going for a white SUB with black pickguard. Pure secks.

Can you get a maple fingerboard on a SUB?

It's the only way to go. :)

Nah they only come in rosewood...but I'm betting they'd sell a shitload more SUB's if they had a maple option.

I'm not a fan of the riffled finish, or the slightly ugly scratchplate, but they're solid for the price. However, I wouldn't buy one because Stingray's are relatively easy to find at great prices.

He speaks truth. A used Stingray will beat a brand new SUB any day of the week.

Indeed, an oft recalled anecdote, but in Newcastle city center I found two Stingrays, both with very minor damage (small dings on the headstock on both) for £650 each, or £1100 for the pair.

Bear in mind that a new Stingray at Sound Control is £1099, and thats a pretty sweet deal!
