I think it is a little unfair to judge guitarists as all being arrogant, I have met loads of astounding guitarists who are very humble and the odd few idiots. But any kind of musician can be arrogant. I've met a lot of arrogant bassists and drummers too.

The guitarist i'm in a band with is one of the most humble guys i know. me and the drummer are the arrogant ones. but the drummer is amazing and i do vocals so i have stupidly high self confidence even though i suck at bass

I'm the arrogant one in the band. Our guitarists and drummer are both quite humble, and our singer/guitarist refuses to get lessons because he thinks it will influence his style and he wants to develop his own, which really holds him back but he's a kick *** song writer :D

There are more arrogant guitarists than bassists, but only because there are more guitarists and a lot of people pick up guitar to try and impress people, but that is still a small proportion of guitarists out there, but it is more known for guitarists to be arrogant. That does not mean however that the majority of them are.

that's the whole "per capita thing" i'm talking about. Like the only reason more white people commit crime than black people in america is because white people outnumber black people. But when you do the percapita and do it as a percentage, it's about 50 50. People are people, and that's that. doesn't matter what instrument you play, arrogance is arrogance.

Led_Zeppelin678: Gee, your not an asshole at all.
I've delt with pompus keyboard players, drummers, horn players, anything you can imagine. I play guitar too and I don't think it's any easier/harder. Theres not a damn thing you can do on guitar you can't do on bass and vic versa. Sterotypes aren't any way to go though.
IE: Everyone in the bass forum complains about how their guitarist just wants to solo while they play roots, when there was a thread in the guitar forum about what kind of bassist they like to play with everyone complained their bassist just stands in the back and roots. A few people even said they wanted "Tony Levin" "Justin Chancellor" "Mike Gordon" and "Billy Sheehan" types.
When bassist start to whine about how their place in the music isn't good enough, they're being just as arrogant.

That is what I was on about, only using white instead of black. In my layout of the forums I use the turqoise background with white lettering, so if you choose a letter to be white it stays white but you can bypass the swear filter doing that. Maybe you use the silver background with black letters though hence why you chose black?

Its really so true though. When I first joined and saw a thread like this, it was about 6 pages long saying that guitarists are wankers. Now, it appears, people have realised that they sound like tits saying that.
Anyway, I know at least 2 modest guitarists with talent, and 2 with a distinct lack of talent who are very arrogant (and one dislikes people who learn their own solos "slash is a sellout, because he knows his own solo. The whole point of a solo is to show people what is in your heart at the moment, and it doesnt matter how good it sounds", ie, bullshiting to make up for his lack of talent. He also feels he has the right to basically tell one of the talented guitarists what to do, but its too long for me to explain why).

All the guitarists I know aren't arrogant at all, but sometimes I do hear the "bass is easier than guitar" thing from people who just don't know much about music, so it doesn't bug me much. The guitarists that I do know that are jackasses about their instrument tend to have very little talent, and are seemingly compensating.
Just being in the bass forum I've seen more bassists that are arrogant (in my opinion) than all the guitarists I've met. But I don't bother with the guitar forums.

GUITARIST ITT!
As a guitarist, here's my point of view.
The majority of guitarists are extremely arrogant, selfish, and moronic. I hate most guitarists.
I find bassists and drummers much more easy to get along with in general than many guitarists.
So many guitarists think they have to be the best at everything, and just play to show off and be flashy. A lot of them just care about themselves, and drop the bass in the mix so you can just hear them solo. People like this are extremely immature.
I'm a solo guitarist, and people tell me that I act nothing like the majority of guitarists. I like when everyone gets their own time in the spotlight, and I treat everything as a whole, and change things for the good of the music.
Most guitarist are stupid and annoying. Look for the ones that aren't.
This is not to say that there aren't tons of cool, humble, awesome guitarists. The ones who don't have their heads up their asses are great people, and tend to be much better players.

But black isn't used all all color schemes. The only one that really works is the size tag (size="2" /size) because unless you have the default size in your internet browser as being smaller or larger, it will blend in every time.

I think the reason why humble guitarists can become far better players than arrogant ones is becuase they know they always need to improve, at no point can they feel accomplished and therefore learn more.
You mentioned you are a solo guitarist, what kind of stuff do you do? I am venturing into the Preston Reed/Kaki King/Michael Hedges kind of style on acoustic using the techniques I use in solo bass on guitar. I'm just wondering if that is the sort of thing you do?

Jody: Jackass keyboardist are the worst, I was sitting in with a group of guys and the keyboardist was like: "Listen guys we don't need a bassist for this, my left hand is better than he'll ever be," thats what was relayed to me the next day from the guitar player. They're also better because they play for the music, and generally have more respect for what they're playing, than for how well they can play it.
I do stuff on the lines of Joe Satriani, but with a lot less boring wankery and such. Kaki King is awesome though.
When my guitarists snaps a string, he always yells to me, "BASS SOLO," while he changes the string. I don't look at this as an excuse to cover up his breakage, or as an oppertunity to take the spotlight away from anyone; but I like the fact that he recognizes my ability and does not hesitate to encourage me.
That says a lot about a musician, especially for a guitarist. Cool, humble, easy-going guitarists are very hard to find. I'd most especially rather hang out with dummers, singers, and fellow bass players.
But in the end it also depends on what type of music to play. Expect arrogant, cocky attitudes if you play in a metal, punk, emo, or screamo band.

ummm i'm going to say no here. Most punk guitarists and musicians in general that i know are quite the opposite. emo screamo i can't speak for because as it is i still don't quite get the difference - its all pop-punk to me. But punk is like the great equaliser. Every real punk musician knows that its totally DIY and every person in the audience could easily be someone on the stage. Thats the thing with punk it levels it all out. We know we're just as lame as them. thats the point.

It is just the case that in certain styles of music they are bred from a sub-culture for a sub-culture. It defined the people they were, a group. There is a lot of cameraderie in metal, they perhaps feel strong together and that is defined in the music. The aesthetics were just what the culture favoured.

I'd be pissed if I was with any kind of musician and that was said to me. Even if he wasn't confident in your playing skill that's no reason to try and bring someone down... if anything fellow musicians should be encouraging of each other in a musical sense. long story short, some people are arogant pricks no matter what instrument they play (if any), but far more people play guitar than drums or bass, so chances are more ****heads will play guitar than any other instrument.

Soem guitarists are arrogant and know **** all about composition, think bass is just root notes. Its mainly younger guitarists though and usually crap ones at that, nowadays mainstream has simple bass lines.
I only join a band with experienced guitarists that know, bassists like to take the lead too.
No instrument is easier than another, no instrument is harder, there are to many varibles to actually depict how hard it is.

When we started my band, my guitarist didn't know how to play guitar. I helped teach him, showed him basic chords and stuff. He never wanted to do solos because he thought he was too ****, so I always got the solos in our songs. Now a couple of years down the track his ability is starting to even out with mine (we're both self-taught, no lessons ever) and it's good because neither of us are under any illusions as to our skill level. We love each other very much.
And that whole thing about the genre you play defining your personality is just bullshit. Except for new hardcore :p

i know many guitarists and not one of them is arrogant... some are a bit disillusioned as to what their abilities are though...
we could probably let this thread die because most of us are in agreeance.
unless somebody wants to disagree...
BEING A GUITARIST DOES NOT NECESSARILY MAKE YOU A PRICK/ARROGANT. BEING A PRICK IN THE FIRST PLACE DOES THAT.

I agree that this thread should be closed. It has long passed its usefulness without further repeating itself.
Twankie: They are not disillusioned, that would mean they are no longer under the illusion of something.
