Hey
my band are going into the studio soon, we consist of guitar, bass, drums and piano. i was just wondering what you think would be the best way to record?
As most of the songs revolve around the piano i was thinking record piano and drums at the same time, and maybe bass at the same time, then layering all the guitar parts over the top?
any more suggestions?
cheers

Steps..
#1
Record the Piano, Bass and Drums. (Seperate tracks of course)
Now you have grounds to start on.
#2
Do the piano track.
#3
Do the guitar track.
#4
Do the drum track.
#5
Do the bass track.
#6
Do the vocal track(s). (If you got one)
Reasons?
#1a
This is so that you continously have something to support the instruments while they are recording. As it is done on seperate tracks, it is easy to pluck an instrument out.
#2a
As you say this one carries most of the tunes - thus, it is first.
#3a
Guitars after the piano to add more support.
#4a
Drums before the bass, 'cause normally, the bass follow the drums,
#5a
Same reasons as above. :p
#6a
Always vocals last.. I know as a vocalist, I prefer to have proper grounds to sing on when I'm in a studio. (Though it has been awhile)
(Note: If you have guitar solo's, they should be at the very last)

Well, that's my suggestion. :)

shouldn't drums be earlier to keep a steady beat on the recording?

this is just my opinoin, but i think that piano keeps rhythm just as well as drums

Well, if they play with a metronome, then there's no problem. :)
If they do it without one, then the beat wont be steady, unless they all tempo extremely well.. I've yet to have heard a band that doesn't go a tad up or down in tempo. :)
