I'm recording with my band (whose genre I won't classify so as to avoid flaming, but it's at least one of the above, influenced by bands such as FATA and Thursday) in a few weeks and I'm listening around for finger-style bassists in the forementioned genres so as to get some tone ideas... So, any suggestions? Or you can also suggest finger-style bassists from other genres whose tones you think would fit in with those styles of music.
Let's try not make this a genre debate.

Saetia (my favorite emo band):

Woodwell (an instrumental song)
Corporeal
Postlapsaria (my favorite song with mad groovy bass)
Roquentin
Some Natures Catch No Plagues
The Poet You Never Were (especially towards the end)

Hot Cross:

Anything off the album "Cryonics" and "Fair Trades and Farewells"

Here are some suggestions:

A Tale for the Ages
Dissertation 14
A Weekend Spent Askance
Patience and Prudence
Figure Eight
Better a Corpse Than a Nun
Consonants

Those two bands are emo. I don't listen to metalcore a lot so I can't help you there.

Thursday as you mentioned, Fall Of Troy, Saosin and Circle Takes The Square would prob have interesting lines.

Despite the fact they all use picks.... *shrugs*

I'm not posting anymore in this thread because I'll get ragged for calmly saying, "...but that's not an emo band."

/points at TFOT and Saosin

:p

I gave my input. Saetia's a great example of finger style bass in an emo band. And with that, adieu.

Oh shush Gav.

They are and that's it.

Take your seig heils and back off a bit.

:rollseyes at the thought of post-hardcore and screamo:

Screamo isn't a genre. :p

And no, Saosin and TFOT clearly are not emo. :D

Although Seven Years by Saosin IS a great song. If all their songs were like that, I'd love them. I hate all of their songs except Seven Years. That's just a good song all around.

Also, note the ":p" which clearly shows the fact I'm being light hearted.

/will not post in this thread anymore and promises he won't

But seriously, for a good emo bassist, you can't go wrong with Saetia. Too bad they had 4 bassists so you can't keep track of who's playing what song (one died, and 2 left/were kicked out. I don't know why).

Psst avoid Saetia.

As for metalcore bands look into Converge, As I Lay Dying, Between The Buried And Me.

Also look into Down, just because.

What about other bassists' tones from other genres you think would sound good?

I'm only posting in here because enim asked me a question.

I love Thursday. One of the best mainstream bands out there, if not the best. Geoff's lyrics are absolutely amazing and the band is overall phenomenol.

The new album is OK. It's better than War All the Time but it's not like First Collapse, their best album by far and one of my favorites ever.

/ignores Naveed and Phil

OK 4 srsly im not postin in hur ne more kthx

Eh...he's decent. Nothing phenomenal but he's certainly not just a rooter.

/inserts another cheap plug for Saetia and Hot Cross

But the album "Cryonics" by Hot Cross because it owns and has sick bassing.

i am not sure exactally what you would classify them as but dillenger escape plan has some nice lines, they are more along the lines of metalcore/thrash stuff

it might seem like a stupid idea. but what about fiddling about and experimenting with your own tone to see what you like. rather than just copying someone elses tone because it fits in etc?

Dillinger are either Grindcore or Math-Metal depending on your persnal fancy.

I nominate Suicide Silence because Deathcore is fun.

Gav.. You're unbelieveable  You clearly have the most posts in this thread, even if you said you wouldn't say anything anymore. But anyway.

Remember that the tone you hear in the band, isn't the tone you hear if you would close the other channels and play the bass alone. A lot of high treble is being sucked up by the guitars/cymbals/whatever and you won't hear it anymore. When I was on the Lowlands festival last year, QOTSA's bassist did hit a few notes before they started the gig to check his sound. I thought: "NOOOO what an AWFUL sound does this guy have! This is going to s u c k."

But it was a great tone in the mix. Soooooo.. I would say: cut some at the 50hz freq to make it less boomy, add some high mids(very important!) and treble and some low mids if you like it fatter.

yeh

check out the killswitch engage dvd to hear awful tone (he has a solo right in the last song)... but in the mix it sounds rather neat.
