Hi, a simple question...or 2.... is it possible for me to vent my snare? Is it hard (i'm up for a challenge) and how would I go doing it? I've looked around and couldn't find anything on doing vents, please feel free to link me to a previous thread as I'm tired and off now. But any advice would be appriciated!
Cheers

Are you sure you want a vent, i mean your snare is pretty good anyways if your the guy with the black panther steel.

Would take a pro shop, or a drill press with a jig and a nice bit to vent the steelsnare.
Wood is easy. However if you can't see the obviousness of simply picking whatever size hole saw and drilling a hole... then you shouldn't be doing it.

It's a wood snare, I want two 2.5" vents. I just didn't know what "tools" I neededto make the vent, also I wasn't too sure because a drum is round and not flat. I just wondered guys. Thanks for the input! I asked if my local store would drill them for me, they said they don't do vents. Although they used to, but they "vent guy" left.
To pitchfork - no I'm not the one with the BP Steel....sadly :(
to drumaster - Sadly I live in the UK and stuff is harder to get and more expensive to do over here.
Anyway cheers guys,

I vented my snare and it sounds like the sex! It was a premier cabria metallic snare that came with my kit, and i wanted to refinish it and vent it. So i stripped it down took it in to school drilled the vents into it. I sprayed it. And it looks and sounds bad ***!

what exactly does venting do? I think I've read that it makes it louded...but is this at the expense of a nice ringy tone?
does it sound loud but sorta muffled because of them? a bit more dry?

Well.. basically it does several things. It removes the pressure build up from the heads being struck, as the air can now fire out through the holes. This of course removes resonance and shortens the fudimental note value of the snare.
Also venting removes a amount of shell material, depending on the vent number and size. This also goes to reduce the amount of tone the drum can produce.
On the up side, it makes the snare much more articulate. Also increases the volume substantionally as the sound can now come from directly inside the drum to the open air.
While bring the lower limit of dynamics up a bit, it allows for pretty much EVERY note to be heard.
This can be great in many rock+ setttings. Just make sure you got clean hands cause now everyone will hear your mistakes.
I have a vented snare with large vents, andseveral with small vents. I also have several unvented snares.
It's just another sound to add to the pallette of choices.
