Neil Peart - Rush - Amazing percussionist, very influential, awesome player.

Martin Lopez - Opeth - Eh.

Keith Moon - The Who - Unrivaled presence, wild, untamed player.

Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, O.S.I. - Good talent, lack of creativity hurts him.

John Bonham - Led Zeppelin - Wacky mustache.

Bill Bruford - Yes, King Crimson, Gordian Knot, others - Great, great drummer. Still going strong today. Very strong sense of time signatures.

Danny Carey - Tool - Best newer, modern drummer. Very creative and fairly technical.

Terry Bozzio - Frank Zappa, Solo, Jeff Beck, others - Incredibly versatile, creative, influential, and technical. Hardly anyone contends.

Ginger Baker - Cream, Blind Faith, Ginger Baker's Airforce - Legendary player. Very jazzy, creative, and influential. His piece, "Toad," paved the way for extended drum solos in rock.

Sean Reinert - Cynic, Death, Godian Knot - Very talented who should only keep getting better.

Carey, bad on 10,000 days?

I think Carey lost a bit of his groove on 10k. The drumming I think is still technically phenomenal, but he sacrificed some of the amazing groove that was on Lateralus to get it. Still great though. I sat there going.... Wheres the Ooomph?

Huber
05-31-2006, 09:04 AM
Maybe the acoustic drumming on 10,000 Days was a little bit of a downfall, but have you guys seen those Mandala things he uses for his electronic drumming? Those things don't look easy to play at all, and he incorporated them very well.

First off, I was joking. A ton of people vote from other forums

However, I agree with what Happy said. It doesn't really show the opinions of R&M when other people who are never here vote. For example, I don't believe most of R&M would have the Tool guy up this much.

I think that's rather stupid not counting n00bs. IMO, you're just trying to take away from Carey's vote count.

I mean, if "TEST" votes for Carey. Then "TESTING1" shows up and votes him too. Then I'd get it. But, casting away an entire batch of votes because "they might be gimmick accounts" is just stupid

For the bassist polls, didn't Cliff Lee Burton or John Myung receive a ridiculous amount of votes from people on alternate accounts? That was annoying.

I'd say in order of technicality, it goes
Bozzio
Peart
Reinert
Bruford
Carey
Lopez
Baker
Portnoy
Bonham
Moon

Sorry Keith. Reinert and Bruford could be switched but this is about how I think it'd go.

BraveUlysses
05-31-2006, 09:38 PM
I would argue that Baker deserves to be up higher. But other than that, pretty good list. Moon wasn't amazing because he was technical. He was amazing because he had so much ****ing energy and hit everything in sight. He has some of the most amazing fills ever on LaL. But technically, he wasn't as good as some of the others. Supposedly, the only time he played drums was live and in the studio. Never practiced and didn't even have a drumkit in his house. I think I heard that somewhere. Not sure how accurate it is though.

PinkFreud
05-31-2006, 09:49 PM
Yeah but I didn't want to cause even more controversy than rating Baker higher than Lopez. It could be argued that he's better than Carey too but that's as high as he could get. Bruford's definitely more technical than him.

I don't know what point you're trying to make but your Family Guy location singles you out as a ****ing tool. No pun intended.

Jacaranda, oh right, I forgot about his AMAZING, UNBELIEVABLE ABILITY TO...use his toms a lot. I stand by what I said, though. He's very creative and I think he'll be regarded as truly great in about 10 years.

And I swear to god, if anyone tries to say, "dude, you need to listen to more Tool," I WILL go off on them.

Yeah me too.

The only drummer in the whole competition that i'd vote over Sean Reinert is Vinnie Colauita. It's a testament to Reinert's ability to play with the legends of rock/ metal. Sean Malone, Jason Gobel, Ron Jarzombek, Paul Masvidal, Chuck Schuldiner, Steve DiGiorgio, Jim Matheos.

I finally believe I just spelt Colauita properly!!

Why is everyone bragging about Carey winning?
Almost every drummers poll is dominated by the same old men who did something great and influential 30 years ago or are already dead since then.

With Carey and Reinert, some "newer" drummers rise to the top, which is a welcome change to all this - and they deserve it.

I mean you could argue that Brann Dailor from Mastodon is another upcoming newish drummer. He didn't make the cut this time round, but with time he just might. I think Reinert is a league above Carey for the record.

Carey's definitely the best part of Tool. If it weren't for Maynard I could at least try to like Tool. I just can't stand how he sings, he's not bad technically, but he sounds so damn annoying.

And of course that doesn't justify him winning this, in that case you could put Travis Barker in the top 10 for being better than his band mates. :)

The whole of the last 5 minutes is just pure awesome. That ride pattern he does, the way the drums just lock in with the guitar for the ending. It's just great.

All the drummers in this poll are great. That's why they made it to the end. Freud - Thanks.

It's the fact that he's not as good as the rest in the poll but he's still winning.

You can't factually quantify the quality of a drummer. Sorry.

And also, Arucard, how can a drummer be pretentious? I'm honestly just curious as to which means someone can find 'pretense' in something like that.

And if someone says anything about 'timing' come off pretentious, go die. It's not that hard to count to ****ing 11 or 15 is it? I mean..You made fun of the IQ's of people who voted for Carey, but in reality, if you find the time signatures as any part of this 'pretense,' then you should really think about how hard it is to at the most 22. (46&2 drum solo?)

I know some people find odd time signatures to be pretentious or pointless or whatever, but like I said, counting to a random number and starting over isn't too hard of a concept to grasp now, is it? Please?

Jake - No problem. And it's possible to approximate how technically talented a drummer is from recordings. Of course, the drummer might not show all of his talent in the studio or even on live bootlegs but one can always assume.

Behemoth Rules All - Peart is in the top two for technical talent here, very influential and creative, has composed some of the most well-known and interesting drum parts in rock, and is held in the highest regard by drummers world wide. I don't know what's so hard to understand about that.

I take it you've never listened to the song Karma?
I have all of Opeth's cd's and listen to them regularly.
So did I. Throw him in there after Bruford and before Baker, I guess. Or he could go behind Baker maybe.
I think he's a little better than Baker.

Voted Lopez for his creatively excellent and tasteful drumming.
Also, as a tribute to him, as he is no longer with Opeth.

Maybe. Maybe. I think they're pretty close, at least.

Lopez not impressive? I don't follow. I may be a bit biased since I'm no DT fan, but I've heard a large portion of their work, and Portnoy sounds as boring and generic as metal drummers could possibly come. Lopez is unique - he adds style to his band's music unlike any drummers I've ever heard, Portnoy most of all. Deliverance and Ghost Reveries have the most serene sounding drums I've ever heard from the double bass to the jazzy fills. He may not stick to lightning speed blast beats like other metal drummers, but he's creative.
