View Full Version : Comedy CD Reviews
Can I do these? They aren't music really, but they are still albums nonetheless.
What do you think, mods?

They said no before, but I remember an old Bill Hicks (<3) CD review somewhere on the site.

if it isn't music then you can't review it. If it's Tenacious D then you can cause it's still music but if it's just comedy with no music then no.
Damn. I really wanted to do some Jim Gaffigan and Dane Cook reviews. :(

Boink that! I say revolt! Afterall, they're albums, just not music.
That's my argument, but I shall do nothing without approval of the almighty mods. :)

It says "Your Music Reviews" not "Your Album Reviews".

They used to be allowed, now they're not. The numerous references to music on the site make sure of that.

Regardless, comedy cd reviews are usually horribly boring, no matter how funny or creative you are.

Dane Cook's a funny bitch.

*Silly bitch. Get your Dane Cook factoids right!
Stephen Lynch is always open, though.

I was thinking about doing some Lynch reviews, but seeing as there are already some...why have two reviews for him? Especially since every song you can really only say two things about: Either "This song is awesomely funny and he's a pretty good guitarist" or "This song is really not funny, but he's still a decent guitarist."
Ok, thanks Med for clearing everything up.
I see no reason as to why comedy reviews cant be put into Other to be honest.

You're a riot!

Comedy is too subjective, though. What one group of people might find hilarious, another group may not even crack a smile at. So if a comedy album was given a 5, but very few people actually thought it was funny; you see the point?

The same can technically be said about each genre on Sputnik though.

I thinks its more about it being sputnikmusic and stuff, and not sputnikalbums. Already been brought up, but meh.

True. People don't always like everything. Comedy could easily be added to the Other category, but I think Sputnik should just be totally music-driven. It is, after all, spawned from a website for musicians.

Already been brought up, and never going to change (most likely, but wtf do I know?) :)

How exactly can you review a comedy album though? It seems kind of pointless to write something like:
"Dane cook has a great voice. His puppy joke was hilarious."
Everyone knows what a comedy album will sound like, there's no need to actually analyze it, that just ruins the experience of listening to the jokes. All that needs to be said is what kind of comedy style it is, and how funny it is, which you can just ask anyone.
edit: I don't think Dane Cook is funny at all btw

I agree with you. I think that comedy is the one artform that shouldn't be analysed.

You are gay. In fact, you're so gay that when other gays see you walking down the street they go, "fag".

How do you review music? Do you just say:
"I like this band. That one song they did sounds good."
No, there are numerous things you could say about it. Comedy is the same way. Don't just analyze what was funny, talk about why it was funny, and the details that add to it.
Dane Cook is annoying as hell anyway, so maybe it's for the best.

I agree. I think comedy should be allowed to be reviewed, but just not to the same detail as you can with music. Music has many layers generally - guitar, bass drums vocals, comedy only has one - vox. I still think that a CD review of comedy would need to be done very well before it would be a decent enough review.
I'm definitely in the corner that thinks comedy albums should be allowed.

I must confess that I find Dane Cook funny but were I actually to experience people talking about him I'd probably kill myself/him/you/him again.
