last wednesday. mmmmm.
best show OF MY LIFE.

the opening bands were lame. i didn't see UV Tigers, but the other ones were:
-Rogue Wave (cheesy lame power-pop indie stuff)
-Bedouin Sound Clash (lamest stereotypical regae rock EVER. the hostess lady came out and was like "this next band is from Canada, and they'd like it if everyone stood up so they could feel a warm welcome in San Diego!" so everybody stood, then when they started playing the stereotypical regae crap, EVERYONE sat down)
-We are Scientists (generic indie rock with no real depth. fun, but nothing i'd care to get into)

then the Lips came on.
their set up was so cool, everything they had was neon orange or blue. the guitars were spacey looking, the had an orange and blue swirly looking rug underneath them, the drums were clear orange, etc.

as soon as they started playing, all these huuuuuge blue balloons got released into the crowd. they were so big you could fit two fully grown adults inside as long as they were sitting. and they were bouncing around in the audience the whole time. they'd go down on your head and you'd hit them back up and they'd go about a hundred feet in the air. it looked like a dream setting with these giant blue orbs bouncing on everyone.

then on stage there were about 40 people in Santa costumes on one side of the band dancing and shining flashlights, and aliens on the other side doing the same thing.

then the backdrop was awesome, it was a huge video screen. it had different things for each song. like a space-scene for Vein of Stars, and an episode of The Teletubbies for A Spoonful Weighs a Ton, and lots of psychedelic imagery as well, each individually picked for the song they were playing. my favorite was the episode of Teletubbies though, it surprisingly fit the song well.

also Wayne kept doing weird things, like after She Don't Use Jelly and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, they played it again but only piano and vocals, and Wayne sung it with a puppet of a nun. you could see it well because the mic had a camera on it that went to the backdrop, so Wayne's face and the nun were projected all huge on the screen. they also used that camera between songs while Wayne was talking about everything from how much marijuana he could smell on the stage, to talking about life and happiness, to talking about an intergalactic battle that was occuring between the Santas and Aliens on either side of him. also Wayne kept using weird things like confetti guns, and a handheld fog-machine, and this firecracker on a string that he twirled over his head during Race for the Prize. and this balloon gun thing that he held and it inflated a giant orange balloon until it was the size of a car, then it exploded and confetti flew out of it.

all-in-all, it was an amazing night. i highly doubt it'll be topped by any show i will see in the near future.

I saw their performance on Austin City Limits and it was really neat. It also got me into "Race For The Prize."

Did they play anything from Clouds Taste Metallic?

nah, the only older song they played was She Don't Use Jelly.
i don't blame them though.

with all those theatrics and such, it wouldn't really fit if they played their more raw rock songs. it's not the kind of show that would fit, IMO.

hell yes. i couldn't see it up close since i was a few rows back, but i could tell there was stuff all over it.

it was weird finding out that most of the things on Yoshimi that i thought were synth were actually just guitar with tones of FX.

Sweet man! I saw them about a month ago, and it was one of the most inspirational/amazing/surreal moments of my life. It was fun hearing Wayne Coyne trashing Bush (I actually saw a couple of older guys at the back leaving haha). My life is pretty much meaningless now, knowing that nothin' will top that magical night.

Oh btw, wasn't the Aliens representing scientologists or sumthin?

i don't know, when describing them (before talking about their intergalactic battle with the Santas) he was like "...and on my right, we have all these space aliens. we don't know if they're harmless or bent on world destruction, but they're about to have an intergalctic war with these Santas."
