View Full Version : What was the first song you learned?
SquierBasser
05-22-2006, 07:53 PM
The first song I learned to play on bass was Snowblind by Black Sabbath. After 30 minutes of strumming the strings without fretting, I decided I'd learn a song, so that was it. Man its really funny but I don't even realize the escalation to better bass playing... I think it was a mix of Black Sabbath and RHCP that got me into better stuff like Rush, Led Zeppelin, stuff like that, now I'm starting to get into learning my notes and all of that good stuff.
hmm, i think it was Longview

learned a whole bunch at once. Longview, sunshine, come as you are, Spillage (minutemen) basic (no fills) Blister in the sun NIB and Ironman (sans solos) and finally jeremy (pearl jam) in a week for my first bass gig
I moved from cello and violin to bass for a friend that needed a bass player, and never looked back

i think it was either californication or whats my age again.

i just realised the age differences here, Jeremy was kind of newish when i learned it.
to Hell: Stu Hamm one of your first. Mighty impressive (i don't know that one or one from the other with him but everything i've heard is pretty cool) one of my friends is a pianist and absolutely owned me when i was playing NIB years later and he picked up the bass and played the solo first time almost perfectly. Also on that first gig i played my generation by the who on cello solo and all, sounds way cool.

It was With or Without You by U2. I remember I was so proud about it. Although I did have tons of fun playing that thing....

munky...yea, i really like all of stu's stuff but IMO love thing is one of his easiest songs to play, really mellow and slower. No real insane tappin/slapping like i'm sure a lotta people know him for
it kinda goes hand in hand with charlottes song, check both of em out sometime, real nice sounding songs

regardless, it was either 'when i fall back down' - Rancid, or 'pea' - RHCP

Prolly Brain Stew  Or maybe Smoke on the Water. Something ridiculously easy. But one of my first songs, and what really got me into bass seriously, was learning Money. I still like to jam with that song playing every once in a while.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure my first was a cheap ripoff of the James Bond theme. It went something like E, F#, and G.

Indeed I think we picked up on the same page. Money is actually the song I played at a party one time, this band was playing that are friends of my brother and they took a set break so I know them and I pick up the bass and just start playin money and they all come in one by one and start playin and I end up playin a few songs and jams with the band for the night then a week later they wanted me to play for them because the long jams went really well. I informed them that I should probably work on my rhythm a bit more beforehand.

That's cool. The fact that you were familiar with fingerpicking on guitar explains how you could learn that as a first song.
